JOB SUMMARY

The Asian Canadian and Asian Migration Studies program (ACAM) is a multidisciplinary undergraduate program exploring the history, culture, and contemporary development of Asian communities in Canada, and Asian migrations outside of Asia. The Program Coordinator is responsible for overseeing all administrative aspects of the ACAM program and coordinating its strategic goals, which include curriculum development and management, budgeting and grant management, as well as community engagement and outreach.

ORGANIZATIONAL STATUS

The Program Coordinator works closely with and reports to the ACRE ACAM Program Development and Research Manager; supervises student assistants at undergraduate and graduate levels; liaises with UBC faculty members, community partners and stakeholders, and other UBC units including the Dean’s Office, Arts Advising, Arts ISIT, Arts Curriculum Committee, Community Engagement Office, the Centre for Community Engaged Learning, the Centre for Teaching, Learning, and Technology, UBC Library, etc.

WORK PERFORMED

CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT AND MANAGEMENT

  • Works closely with ACAM Director, ACAM Minor Advisor, ACRE ACAM Program Development and Research Manager, and the ACAM Faculty Advisory Committee to align curriculum goals with the program's strategic vision.
  • Oversees the planning and implementation of courses and curriculum initiatives that align with the program’s commitment to community-engaged, experiential learning, including:
    • Liaising with campus partners such as Community Engagement Office, Centre for Community Engaged Learning, Learning Exchange, and Go Global.
    • Managing and maintaining relationships with community partners to support course-based university-community collaboration.
    • Supervising student assistants to provide coordination support for course-related public-facing programming and community outreach.
    • Overseeing overall budget planning and expenditures associated with the courses.
    • Managing off-campus research and learning opportunities that benefit both students and community partners.
  • Manages consultation process for curriculum proposals and changes involving faculty, students, campus partners, and community stakeholders.
  • Oversees administration of new and existing ACAM courses.
  • Works with ACRE ACAM Program Development and Research Manager to support revenue plus program development opportunities.

BUDGETING AND GRANT MANAGEMENT

  • Develops and maintains budget plans and expenditure reports for public-facing and student engagement programming.
  • Works with ACAM Director and ACRE ACAM Program Development and Research Manager to identify and secure potential funding opportunities.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AND OUTREACH

  • Works with ACRE ACAM Program Development and Research Manager to maintain ongoing relationships with key units on campus.
  • Supervises student assistants in the development and implementation of initiatives, activities, and communication contents.
  • Advises and works with partners on and off campus on project-based collaboration, event planning and promotion.

ADMINISTRATION AND OPERATION

  • Manages ACAM program administration and operations, including office organization and documentation.
  • Manages the recruitment and hiring process for sessional instructors and student assistants.
  • Develops effective strategies for student recruitment and engagement for new and existing courses.
  • Supervises and provides onboarding training and ongoing guidance for student assistants.
  • Works with ACAM Director, ACAM Minor Advisor, and ACAM affiliated faculty on managing student recruitment, course registration, student data management, and advising.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Primary place of work is the UBC main campus. Work outside of the typical operating hours of the University may be required, including evenings and weekends. Flexibility with scheduling and traveling to off-campus meetings is required.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Reports directly to the ACRE ACAM Program Development and Research Manager. May receive occasional guidance and project requests from the ACAM Director and ACAM teaching faculty.

SUPERVISION GIVEN

Supervises student assistants at undergraduate and graduate levels; responsible for hiring, training, discipline, and termination.

CONSEQUENCE OF ERROR

The success of the Program will enhance the reputation of UBC. The position must exercise considerable judgment and initiative in decision-making.

QUALIFICATIONS

Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of one to two years of related experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own. Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline, preferably with a specialization in Asian Canadian studies. Intermediate fluency in one or more Asian languages preferred. Demonstrated experience in working with Asian Canadian community organizations. Articulate in dealing with faculty, students, staff and community stakeholders in a multicultural context.
