Job description

The Department of Medicine and the Division of Geriatric Medicine at the University of Ottawa and the Ottawa Hospital is looking for an Academic Geriatrician.

The Division of Geriatric Medicine is renowned for delivery of outstanding care and recognized internationally for its programs, including creating the foundation for the development of the globally endorsed and communicated Geriatrics 5Ms: Mind, Mobility, Medications, Multi-complexity & Matters Most, as a way to explain what Geriatricians do. The Division consists of a dynamic group of 10 full-time academic Geriatricians within a progressive Department of Medicine. The Division is an integral partner of the Regional Geriatric Program of Eastern Ontario, which manages a wide spectrum of services for older people within the region.

The Ottawa Hospital is a 1150 bed tertiary-care hospital serving Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec at four inpatient sites and one ambulatory centre. There are approximately 50,000 inpatient admissions, 160,000 emergency visits and over one million outpatient visits annually.

The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI) is TOH’s research arm. It ranks fourth out of more than 600 Canadian hospitals for competitive, peer-reviewed grants from the prestigious Canadian Institutes of Health Research. OHRI houses over 2,200 researchers, publishing more than 2,000 studies yearly, with hundreds being high impact publications and places 5th overall in Canada for research funding.

The Department of Medicine is a research-intensive Department. Members currently hold 28 University Research Chairs. The Department receives approximately $60 million per year in external research funding and members publish approximately 1200 peer-reviewed publications annually.

The Faculty of Medicine is a nationally recognized leader, ranked among Canada’s top-tier medical faculties. The Faculty ranks 3rd in Canada for research intensity in Medicine/Science and 4th in Canada for citations. The University of Ottawa is the largest bilingual university in the world and the first and largest bilingual medical school in Canada. Together, these achievements are a strong testament to the competitiveness and excellence of our Faculty.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will perform clinical services, teach and supervise medical students and residents as well as have the opportunity to participate in medical research. Clinical activities include an acute care inpatient Geriatric Medicine Unit, consultation teams at two campuses, and specialized ambulatory clinics. Rural clinics, a regional Geriatric Emergency Management program and Geriatric Assessment and Outreach teams lead the way in community-based assessments of older adults. Additionally, there is a Memory Disorders program at the Elisabeth Bruyère Hospital.

We have an expanding variety of research activities, including clinical (dementia & driving, frailty and pre-op assessment, delirium management, mobility, optimal prescribing), health services delivery (collaborative specialty care such as TAVI, orthopedics, trauma) and medical education.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will be a specialist in Geriatric Medicine. The successful candidate must be eligible to be licensed to practice medicine in Ontario; be a member of, or be eligible to be a member of, the Canadian Medical Protective Association; and have, or be eligible for certification in Geriatric Medicine by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. The successful candidate will be eligible to hold an academic appointment at the rank of an Assistant Professor or higher at the University of Ottawa. Academic rank will be commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience. The University of Ottawa and The Ottawa Hospital are bilingual institutions and therefore in the case of potentially successful candidates of equal ability, a bilingual (French/English) candidate would be preferred.

The income for this position is derived from a variety of sources including clinical billings, salary support as well as honorariums/stipends. Health and welfare benefits including extended health, dental and disability insurance as well as life insurance are offered to full-time physicians.
