Doctoral scholarship holder chiroptical spectroscopy of the interaction of various chiral molecules with carbon nanotubes

Let’s shape the future - University of Antwerp

The University of Antwerp is a dynamic, forward-thinking, European university. We offer an innovative academic education to more than 20,000 students, conduct pioneering scientific research, and play an important service-providing role in society. We are one of the largest, most international, and most innovative employers in the region. With more than 6,000 employees from 100 different countries, we are helping to build tomorrow's world every day.

The Departments of Chemistry/Physics in the Faculty of Sciences is looking for a full-time (100%) doctoral scholarship holder in the field of chiroptical spectroscopy of the interaction of various chiral molecules with carbon nanotubes, in particular searching for signal enhancement in vibrational circular dichroism and chirality induction.

Position

  • You will work actively on the preparation of a PhD thesis in the field of Experimental Physics, co-supervised by (Chemistry) and (Physics) within a project funded by FWO.
  • You will study the interaction of carbon nanotubes with chiral molecules, using chiroptical spectroscopy, particularly electronic circular dichroism, vibrational circular dichroism, Raman optical activity, and circularly polarized emission.
  • This project involves spectroscopic characterization and will require you to prepare your own samples; experience in chemical preparation techniques is a plus.
  • You will publish scientific articles related to the research project.
  • You will carry out a limited number of teaching and research support tasks for the department of Chemistry.

Profile

  • You hold a Master's degree in Chemistry, Physics, or Materials Science. Students in the final year of their degree can also apply.
  • Your teaching competences align with the University of Antwerp’s educational vision.
  • You act with attention to quality, integrity, creativity, and cooperation.
  • You are very motivated for experimental research and able to work independently as well as in a team setting. You are fluent in English. Knowledge of Matlab is a plus, and additional experience in one or more of the following fields is highly appreciated: laser spectroscopy, chiroptical spectroscopy, nanoscience, carbon nanotube characterization and/or processing, physical chemistry.

What we offer

  • A doctoral scholarship for a period of one year, renewable for another three years following a positive evaluation.
  • The planned start date is April 2025 or as soon as possible after that date.
  • Your monthly scholarship amount is calculated according to the scholarship amounts for doctoral scholarship holders.
  • You will receive ecocheques, Internet-connectivity allowance, and a bicycle allowance or full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting.
  • You will work at Campus Drie Eiken / Campus Groenenborger in a dynamic and stimulating working environment.

Want to apply?

  • You can apply for this vacancy through the University of Antwerp’s online job application platform up to and including 16th of February 2025 (by midnight Brussels time). Include the following attachments:
    • a motivation letter
    • your academic CV
    • the contact details of at least two referees, including your master thesis supervisor
  • The selection committee reviews all applications as soon as possible after the application deadline. Eligible candidates will be informed about the next steps in the selection procedure, including an online interview.
