Organizational Setting
The Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications implements the IAEA's Major Programme 2, "Nuclear Techniques for Development and Environmental Protection". This Major Programme comprises individual programmes on food and agriculture, human health, water resources, environment and radiation technologies. The Joint FAO/IAEA Centre of Nuclear Techniques in Food and Agriculture assists Member States in using nuclear techniques and related technologies to improve food security, alleviate poverty and promote sustainable agriculture.
Main Purpose
As a member of a team led by the Head of the Insect Pest Control Section, the Medical Entomologist provides expertise and services in the field of human disease vectors in the context of helping Member States in the planning and application of area-wide pest management (AW-IPM) programmes integrating the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) and related technologies with other suppression methods.
Role
The Medical Entomologist is responsible for:
- Providing managerial and technical advice to FAO and IAEA Member States in support of SIT planning and its integration with other insect pest control methods.
- Providing technical technology transfer and management support to Technical Cooperation projects on human disease vectors.
- Managing and technically guiding coordinated research projects to develop solutions to technical obstacles in field programmes.
- Contributing to policy development, priority setting, and training materials in this field.
Functions / Key Results Expected
The Medical Entomologist will:
- Provide technical and strategic advice to Member States through feasibility studies, economic assessments, and the design and technical support of area-wide field projects.
- Transfer technology and develop technical capacity by organizing and lecturing at training courses and workshops.
- Contribute to policy development and regulatory activities through analytical studies and benefit-cost assessments.
- Ensure visibility and impact of activities by disseminating data through public information channels and preparing technical manuals.
- Plan, manage, implement, and evaluate coordinated research projects aimed at improving SIT application.
- Act as the focal point for all delegated projects/activities ensuring efficient utilization of resources.

Required Expertise
Function: Disease Vectors Insect Pest Control
A thorough technical and entomological knowledge of insect behaviour, quality management, genetics and radiation for the application of genetic methods.
Qualifications, Experience and Language skills
Bachelor's Degree in medical entomology, biology or related field with emphasis on entomology.
- Advanced degree in medical entomology or related field is an asset.
- Minimum five years of applied experience in SIT and related techniques.
- Experience in international settings is a strong asset.
- Experience coordinating multidisciplinary teams in insect pest control projects.
- Awareness of relevant FAO and IAEA mechanisms.
- Practical field experience in transferring SIT technologies.
- Proven ability to manage operational human disease vector programmes.
- Demonstrated ability to plan and evaluate sterile mosquito releases.
- Proven record of scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals.
- Experience in editing and publishing technical documents.
Excellent command of English is required. Knowledge of other IAEA languages is an asset.
