Urban Planning Engineer

Job Description:

Key roles and responsibilities:

  1. Provide support and participate in liaison with government authorities regarding development objectives, policies and procedures.
  2. Work from concept design through to detailed design, producing CAD drawings, graphic presentations and design narratives to budget and schedule.
  3. Work closely with the Master Planners and design team to develop master plan, urban planning and landscaping solutions for various types of projects.
  4. Interact and communicate with clients and consultants during the design phase and at presentations.
  5. Solve problems in connection with the urban design and planning of large projects.
  6. Assist in developing urban design and planning concepts incorporating site planning, landscape planning, transportation and infrastructure systems.
  7. Assist with the preparation of complete design documents on major projects.
  8. Coordinate work with the project team.
  9. Be responsible for various portions of master plan and site plan development documents while working on assigned tasks within a project.
  10. Develop urban design and planning concepts incorporating site planning, landscape planning, transportation and infrastructure systems.
  11. Establish weekly meetings to review project status and formulate action items.
  12. Perform other responsibilities associated with this position as may be appropriate.
  13. Develop narratives on land use, context, concept and detailed maps including SWOT analysis.
  14. Demonstrate teamwork and collaboration within a team and dedication to meet client deadlines.
  15. Manage, coordinate and lead smaller, less complex projects independently with less oversight, including leading smaller project client meetings and taking ownership of report structure and content.
  16. Coordinate teams to prepare project deliverables and applicable planning authorities requirements and coordinate with various disciplines' technical input and output into a project or a proposal.
  17. Initiate and drive innovative approaches to efficient project delivery, e.g., improved site analysis assessment or site planning, due diligence and high-level developer assessment.
  18. Prepare/review and understand datasets to correlate population projections against market demands and supply.
  19. Prepare methodology for small scale proposals without direct supervision and understand and carry out the necessary internal processes to obtain approvals for proposal submission.
  20. Lead specialty topics/interests in urban planning, e.g., wellness planning/placemaking.
  21. Stay up to date with current industry trends, approaches, tools and methods.

Minimum Requirements:

  1. Bachelor's degree in Urban Planning and design, urban policy, sustainable development or equivalent.
  2. 10+ years of related urban planning/master planning experience is required.
  3. Professional membership such as RTPI, AICP, PIA, CIP, SIP or equivalent preferred.
  4. Broad general technical and business background, such as experience in developing city visioning, theming, and benchmarking.
  5. Experience in policy development and governance is a plus.
  6. Experience of planning in the MENA region, especially in the GCC area.
  7. Good knowledge of data collection and research capabilities and ability to analyze qualitative data.
  8. Solid understanding of various scales of planning projects and determine differences and requirements, communicating effectively.
  9. Thorough understanding of local and international practices and test standards for Urban planning.
  10. Ability to carry out baseline assessments, analyze various data and develop criteria for the assessment of master plans.
  11. Ability to develop implementation and phasing planning.
  12. Sound understanding of planning/environmental governance and policy, with the ability to communicate planning/environmental governance and policy and make recommendations to clients where relevant.
  13. Software requirements include InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  14. Strong eye for detail coupled with a methodical and organized approach.
  15. Forward-thinking individual ready to change the status quo and bring fresh ideas to the team on managing and delivering projects.
  16. Exceptional verbal and written communication skills will be well utilized, and the ability to develop internal and external working relationships is essential.
