ROLE PURPOSE

As Technician I - IT Data Center Operations, you will be responsible for the installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of fiber optic and structured cabling systems, as well as GSM mobile systems infrastructure within the IDF/MDF (Intermediate/Main Distribution Frame) and all data center environments across all Space42 sites. Reporting to the Manager - IT Data Center Operations, you will optimize network connectivity, enhance hardware and network performance, and manage electrical systems (Rack PDUs and ATS) across various data centers and commercial buildings. You will play a key role in troubleshooting, maximizing system efficiency, and ensuring the reliability of both cabling infrastructure and critical systems within data centers.

Responsibilities

  • Perform regular inspection, maintenance, and troubleshooting of data center equipment, including servers, storage, and networking systems.
  • Install, terminate, and test structured cabling systems (fiber optic, copper, etc.) and ensure proper cable management, including cross-connects for coax, fiber, and twisted pair copper.
  • Install, terminate, and test fiber optic cables (single-mode and multi-mode) and structured copper cabling (Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6A, Cat7) for voice, data, and video systems.
  • Set up telecommunications racks, patch panels, and cable management systems for both fiber optic and copper systems.
  • Implement structured cabling for data centers, new offices, and commercial buildings, ensuring compliance with industry standards.
  • Perform fiber optic splicing and termination (fusion splicing, mechanical splicing) for both indoor and outdoor installations.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve connectivity issues, such as signal loss, poor performance, or network downtime, using testing equipment like power meters, light sources, and cable certifiers.
  • Install, configure, and maintain Rack PDUs to ensure proper power distribution across servers and equipment racks.
  • Manage and monitor power loads on each PDU to ensure that each rack receives appropriate power levels without overloading circuits.
  • Maintain accurate records of hardware installations, configurations, and troubleshooting activities; update data center diagrams, workflows, and procedural documentation.
  • Coordinate with relevant ISPs to perform hardware and software maintenance of GSM mobile systems, ensuring optimal performance and connectivity within the mobile network.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to GSM equipment, such as signal degradation, network connectivity problems, and interference.
  • Coordinate with third-party vendors for the maintenance, repair, and upgrade of data center equipment and infrastructure.
  • Monitor the ATS for accurate functionality, ensuring automatic switching between power sources during outages.
  • Perform regular ATS testing to ensure that the transfer process is seamless and that backup power systems are operational.
  • Maintain detailed records of fiber optic, structured cabling, and GSM mobile system installations, including cable pathways, hardware configurations, and test results.
  • Assist in hardware setup, commissioning, decommissioning, and collaborate with other IT teams for issue resolution and system updates.
  • Ensure accurate labeling and organizational standards for all installed systems, facilitating future upgrades and troubleshooting.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • CompTIA A+/Network+ or CCNA certifications.
  • At least 5 years of hands-on experience in IT or data center operations, including structured cabling, hardware maintenance, and troubleshooting.
  • Basic understanding of IT infrastructure, including servers, networking, and storage systems.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills with the ability to resolve hardware, software, and network issues efficiently.
  • Ability to lift heavy equipment (up to 50 lbs.) and work in data center environments with high noise and temperature fluctuations.
  • Comfort with working in tight spaces, climbing ladders, or working at heights.
  • Ability to read and interpret installation drawings (e.g., Visio drawings/spreadsheets).
  • General knowledge of safe working practices (e.g., tool safety, eye protection, ladder safety).
  • Knowledge of structured cabling systems, including installation, testing, and maintenance.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Excellent communication and collaborative skills.
  • Experience in aerospace, defense, or telecom sectors.
  • Willingness to work shifts, weekends, or on-call for 24/7 support.
  • Basic knowledge of AI/ML infrastructure or edge computing concepts.
