Job description

As a Gensler Technical Designer, your job is to combine creativity and technical knowledge with a focus on project delivery and an understanding of how to produce functionally beautiful designs for our clients. You have great design skills and technical understanding, a background in architecture or design, and a portfolio of high-quality project work.

What You Will Do

  1. Participate in all project phases, including programming, conceptual designs, presentations, schematic design, design development, construction documents and production.
  2. Provide design support and documentation during completion and execution of design concepts.
  3. Perform technical design assignments that include programming client needs, conceptual design, schematic design, design development, space planning and construction documentation.
  4. Conduct and document site visits, process submittals, substitution requests, and RFIs during construction.
  5. Collaborate with design team, clients, consultants, contractors, fabricators and other vendors to meet overall project objectives.
  6. Produce graphic presentations, 3D renderings, plans, elevations, details and sections through to detailed construction drawings.
  7. Resolve complex design issues with innovative and practical solutions.
  8. Support project sustainability targets throughout project phases and actively engage in delivering them. Coordinate sustainability targets with project consultants and engineers.
  9. Implement sustainable design strategies in every project stage and investigate solutions to sustainable design challenges.
  10. Work collaboratively with the team to optimize sustainability performance through design iterations and research.
  11. Lead climate focused analysis and studies for each project.
  12. Contribute to office activities, initiatives, and learning programs.

Your Qualifications

  1. Advanced degree in Architecture or Design preferred.
  2. 6+ years of relevant architecture and design experience, with a strong background designing multiple building typologies of varying scale.
  3. Proficient in design modeling/visualization tools including but not limited to Revit, Rhino, Enscape; having experience with Excel and computational tools like Grasshopper/Dynamo is also a plus.
  4. Proficient in production software including but not limited to the Adobe Creative Suite; experience working with video/animation software such as After Effects and Premiere is a plus.
  5. Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  6. Outstanding graphic presentation skills.
  7. Creative, original thinking and technically biased, demonstrated through a strong creative and technical portfolio.
  8. LEED, WELL, Fitwel, LFA or other rating systems accreditation preferable.
  9. Previous experience in sustainable design projects preferable, especially built projects with LEED, Living Building Challenge, WELL Building Standard, Fitwel and/or Net Zero Building certification.
  10. Demonstrate a collaborative and integrated approach towards achieving high sustainability project goals.
  11. Ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines efficiently.
  12. Ability to develop collaborative relationships across the firm, with clients, and with other key partners.

Your Design Technology Qualifications

  1. Good working knowledge and experience in Autodesk Revit for design authoring, documentation, data extracts and project delivery.
  2. Good knowledge and experience with the strategic planning and setup of BIM projects.
  3. Good knowledge and experience with collaboration within the BIM context, including cloud-based markups, consultant coordination and clash detection.
  4. Good knowledge and experience with interoperability workflows between Rhino & Revit throughout all the stages of a project.
  5. Basic understanding and familiarity in Rhinoceros for design authoring.
  6. Good knowledge and experience with real-time rendering processes, and material creation & management within the context of integrated BIM and parametric workflows.
  7. Understanding of the capabilities and application of Information Management tools such as Aconex, Asite, Newforma, etc.
  8. Basic understanding and familiarity with Computational Design applications such as Grasshopper and/or Dynamo.
  9. Basic understanding and familiarity with simulation principles and processes, including interpretation and application of results.
  10. Basic understanding and familiarity with the use of VR walkthroughs and panoramas.
