The Specialist Physician shares the same responsibility as the Consultant Physician for delivering high quality, evidence-based, and patient-centered care. The post holder is expected to be an example of clinical excellence within the Division and contributes to the supervision and training of junior medical staff.

- Tier 2: NLT 2 years of clinical experience post qualification in an internationally accredited institute.

Supports and adheres to all hospital departmental and divisional initiatives, policies, and procedures. Supports and participates in the organization’s performance management system, including peer review and the productivity and utilization review processes. Assists Consultant staff in ensuring that adequate medical coverage is provided within the Division at all times. Attends Divisional meetings as invited. Supports the reporting, investigation, and response to untoward incidents. Assumes other administrative or clinical duties as requested by the Consultant Staff.
Under the supervision of the Consultant Physician, diagnoses and treats patients according to established standards of best practice for the post holder’s specialty. The Specialist’s clinical duties include but are not limited to the following:
- Assists the Consultant Physician in supervising the activities of junior medical staff, and jointly assumes responsibility for the care they provide.
- Complies with all hospital policies regarding admissions, consultations, daily patient care, surgical procedures, discharge protocols, outpatient, and follow-up practices.
- Practices appropriate utilization of the organization’s resources.
- Leads ward rounds; reassesses both inpatients and outpatients on a regular basis, in line with established best practice.
- Accurately documents all relevant clinical information in a clear and timely fashion in accordance with established procedures.
- Regularly reviews results of all investigations and modifies treatment as required.
- Liaises with other medical specialties and support services for additional input as required.
- Actively participates in multi-disciplinary meetings to help plan effective, safe, and holistic care for individual patients.
- Ensures preparation of patients for all procedures including obtaining informed consent.
- Accepts clinically appropriate referrals from the Emergency Department, primary care, other departments, specialty clinics, walk-in patients, and patients referred from other hospitals.
- Participates in and supports the Consultant Physician in ensuring the provision of out-of-hours on-call coverage on a rotational basis including evenings, nights, weekends, and public holidays as required.
- Communicates clinical information to patients and the patient’s family and friends (with consent of the patient) in a timely manner.
- Maintains a good working relationship with members of staff and promotes collaboration and a team-based approach to patient care.
- Performs other clinical duties as assigned.
- Helps support quality improvement initiatives within the Division.
- Supports a culture of regular audit and encourages the use of audit results for improving clinical practice.
- Promotes and participates in clinical research and publication.
- Keeps abreast of the current, relevant literature and the latest trends and technologies in the industry.

Corresponding Activities performed by the role include complying consistently with facility policies, procedures, and practices while ensuring alignment with SSMC facilities policies. Completing and maintaining regulatory requirements including licensure and certification and other mandatory training within established time frames.
