Roles and responsibilities

Special Education Teacher is responsible for developing and implementing individualized education plans (IEPs) for students with disabilities. They create a supportive and inclusive learning environment, adapting teaching methods and materials to meet the diverse needs of students.
Key Responsibilities

  • Assess students' skills and needs to develop tailored IEPs.
  • Create and adapt lesson plans and instructional materials for students with varying abilities.
  • Implement classroom management techniques to foster a positive learning environment.
  • Collaborate with general education teachers, specialists, and parents to ensure comprehensive support.
  • Monitor and document student progress, adjusting strategies as needed.
  • Provide direct instruction in academic and life skills.
  • Use assistive technology and adaptive resources to enhance learning.
  • Conduct ongoing assessments and maintain accurate records of student achievements.
  • Advocate for students' rights and provide guidance to families on available resources and services.

Education And Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Special Education
  • Experience working with students with disabilities in an educational setting is highly beneficial.

  • Adaptability
    Adjusting lessons and teaching approaches based on the student’s progress, needs, and abilities. Being flexible to accommodate different learning styles and difficulties.

  • Knowledge of Disabilities and Laws
    Understanding various disabilities (e.g., autism, ADHD, learning disabilities, intellectual disabilities, physical disabilities) and their impact on learning. Familiarity with laws and regulations, such as IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act), that guide special education practices.

  • Assessment and Progress Monitoring
    Using formal and informal assessments to evaluate student progress. Setting academic and behavioral goals and tracking student development toward these goals.

  • Organization and Record-Keeping
    Keeping detailed records of student progress, IEPs, accommodations, and assessments. Managing multiple students with different needs and ensuring that IEPs are followed consistently.

  • Strong Communication Skills
    Effectively communicating with students, parents, and other professionals. Providing clear instructions, feedback, and explanations to students of varying abilities.
