Job description
JOB DESCRIPTION

The role is responsible for independently administering all respiratory therapy interventions. The role will also be responsible for monitoring and supervising junior staff.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Performs respiratory care procedures as per established policy and procedures, i.e. if required under the direction of supervisor and physicians.
  2. Assumes responsibility for operating autonomously, utilizing critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  3. Participates in the development and modification of respiratory care management plans and therapeutic goals for patients with cardiopulmonary diseases in consultation with physicians.
  4. Assists the physician and Code Team in cardiac/respiratory arrest situations.
  5. Provides advanced emergency airway care according to approved protocol.
  6. Performs and/or assists with pulmonary and sleep diagnostic procedures as required.
  7. Assesses the availability of sufficient inventory of material supplies and equipment for performance of duties and reports shortages to supervisor at the earliest convenience, ordering replenishments when necessary.
  8. Provides troubleshooting of Respiratory Care equipment and highlights any maintenance requirements or breakdowns to supervisor.
  9. Supervises junior staff and ensures their adherence to established rules and policies as applied and implemented in the Section/Department/Facility.
  10. Manages daily workload allocation.
  11. Contributes to promoting and maintaining quality in all services and ensuring continuous quality improvement measures are in place. Conducts method evaluation/development as per standard policies and procedures as required.
  12. Assists in the planning and developing policies that guide the service implementation process as required.
  13. Delivers and participates in training and education sessions in the safe and secure handling of drugs and equipment, prescribing (whenever applicable), administration and treatment and management i.e. teaching, induction, peer review, case studies, and clinical presentations.
  14. Participates in department programs/committees, various hospital committees, and staff meetings as required.
  15. Assists in the education, development, orientation of new employees, and preceptorship of students as assigned.
  16. Performs additional tasks as assigned by the department manager or supervisor.

  1. Ensures implementation of department policies and the annual business plan.
  2. Ensures patient receives the highest standards of care.
  3. Reduces costs, eliminates waste, and assures resources are used in the most effective manner.
  4. Demonstrates a high level of competency in utilization of equipment.
  5. Practices within the expressed limits of established policies and procedures.
  6. Ensures patient care activity data are documented in accordance with established guidelines.
QUALIFICATIONS
Experience:
Required:
  1. Minimum 5 years clinical experience as a respiratory therapist.
Desired:
  1. Active adult, pediatric, and neonatal intensive care involvement.
Educational Qualification:
Required:
  1. Bachelor's Degree in respiratory therapy or Associate degree in Respiratory Therapy (minimum two (2) years course duration).
  2. Current National License as Respiratory Therapist.
