Senior Lab Engineer - General Education Unit

Senior Lab Engineer is responsible for managing the functioning and development of labs within the GEU and working closely with faculty to provide high-quality technical support in labs.

Job Responsibilities:

1. Manage the allocation of work and responsibilities to the assigned technical team.
2. Direct the preparation of lab experiments as advised by the course faculty.
3. Coordinate the set-up of required tools, and ensure calibration and proper functioning of equipment.
4. Instruct and demonstrate to students the proper techniques in lab safety, and the use and operation of lab equipment.
5. Ensure work is carried out and performed to the required standards.
6. Liaise with the faculty concerned to receive advice regarding course and final-year projects intended for students.
7. Study projects and ensure that all requirements are met.
8. Coordinate the preparation of appropriate work areas for students, set up the required tools, equipment, materials, and test equipment to ensure proper functioning.
9. Contribute technical knowledge to the design, upgrade, and revision of experiments.
10. Monitor and maintain an organized, clean, and safe working environment in labs and ensure compliance with work-related legal, health, and safety standards.
11. Contribute to recruitment, training, development, and performance appraisal of the assigned lab staff.
12. Ensure stock of equipment and consumables within a pre-set level of expenditure.
13. Liaise with faculty members to prepare orders for updating equipment to meet educational standards.
14. Support in budget preparation by highlighting resource requirements such as equipment, manpower, and space.
15. Perform other related duties such as maintaining and updating a database on equipment catalogs, manuals, and data books.
16. Advise faculty and students on all aspects of technical support services.
17. Work closely with the direct supervisor to provide excellent lab services to faculty, students, and researchers.
18. Adhere to the University's information security and confidentiality policies and procedures, and report breaches or other security risks accordingly.
19. Coordinate with other departments to facilitate the accomplishment of tasks and responsibilities, as and when needed.
20. Demonstrate a strong commitment and practice to maintaining a safe and healthy work environment.
21. Perform any other tasks assigned by the Line Manager.
