About the Role
Nervora is seeking an experienced Senior Editor for WIRED Middle East. Reporting to the editorial director, this role is integral in leading the editorial team.
In this role, you will be responsible for both the big picture and the smaller details. Working with the editorial director, you'll develop and constantly iterate on editorial strategies and coverage plans across tech companies, personalities, and events that will deliver results.
You'll be responsible for working with the editorial team to implement the strategies and plans and partnering closely with the tech team to maximize the reach and impact of the journalism you oversee across print and digital.
To be successful in this position, you should have extensive knowledge of the tech industry's major and upcoming players and strong experience in leading a team. The ideal candidate should have an informed view of the power of big platforms, the impact of artificial intelligence, the future of work, and other key areas of our coverage. We're less interested in earnings reports than in getting inside pivotal companies and exploring their influence. On a tactical level, we're looking for someone who is strategic, empathetic, and collaborative.
Since you'll be leading the editorial team, you need to know when to lean in, when to delegate, and how to motivate. You'll also need to work effectively with other members of the commercial, events, and tech teams. Ultimately, you will be a key contributor to the success of WIRED Middle East as measured by impact correlating to audience size and engagement.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the WIRED Middle East editorial team and publish a world-class magazine alongside digital content. This includes overseeing the editorial budget and production of the print issues and digital platforms (wired.me and social), and all its supplements.
- Work with the editorial director to define goals and priorities, ensuring all content plans ladder up to broader goals and objectives.
- Conceive, pitch, and develop a content strategy and planning for WIRED Middle East.
- Manage all projects from ideation to execution, including content planning, writing, assigning, tracking, and editing stories; manage budgets; proofreading, and answering fact-checking and copy queries; see stories through production processes; and partner with the tech team to ensure stories have maximum impact across digital platforms.
- Review all copies to ensure they are on brand with a consistent writing style and work with the proofreader.
- Proactively seek out interesting, diverse voices who can help WIRED Middle East deliver differentiated stories; and stay up to date with regional and global trends, cultural shifts, and compelling topics relevant to the WIRED Middle East's audience.
- Work with the tech team for insights to make data-driven strategic editorial decisions, content planning, and review/improve key KPIs as aligned with the editorial director.
- Work hand-in-hand with the commercial team and partner brands to support the production of compelling content ideation of commercial concepts.
- Ideate and work on strategic planning of events and other special projects of WIRED Middle East.
- Lead and mentor the WIRED Middle East editorial team including, but not limited to: performance management for direct reports; talent development; implementing clear processes and communication channels; fostering a transparent, respectful, inclusive, and collaborative team environment.
- Contribute to brand extensions, social platforms, and additional projects as needed.
- Represent the brand in a public-facing way as necessary, such as social media, in press opportunities, and panels, and foster/maintain strong connections with the region's tech opinion leaders.
Basic Qualifications
- At least 5 years of experience as an editor in a fast-paced, digital, and news-driven environment, with at least 3+ years of managing a team.
- A past portfolio of work that reflects significant experience covering the tech industry, including a consistent record of breaking news.
- Experience overseeing multi-platform content from brainstorming to execution; able to balance daily deadlines with longer-lead projects and delegate as appropriate to maximize the team's impact.
- Strong command of editorial curation and experience and passion for delivering big, ambitious coverage, particularly around tech culture, innovation, AI, and other core areas of focus.
- Skilled at helping writers conceptualize stories and work to get the best out of writers; equally adept at helping writers achieve their best reporting and writing. Able to structure a story for maximum impact, reader understanding, and engagement.
- Highly collaborative with excellent communication skills; adept at working with various teams.
- Exemplary verbal and written communication skills in English, with an ability to deliver compelling presentations and inspiring narrative and storytelling. Fluency in Arabic is a plus.
- Professional standards of journalism and expert mid-long-form copywriting.
- Deep understanding and extensive experience on social media platforms, SEO, and fundamentals of CMS.
- Experience with story analytics and tools like Chartbeat and Google Analytics.
- CMS skills, Search Engine Optimization (SEO), Adobe Creative Suite, and digital editing.
