Job description

Job Summary: The Safety Officer is responsible for monitoring and assessing hazardous and unsafe situations on construction sites ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations and fostering a culture of safety among all personnel. The role involves coordinating and implementing safety programs, conducting risk assessments, and providing safety training to workers. The Safety Officer plays a crucial role in minimizing risks and preventing accidents on site.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Safety Compliance: Ensure compliance with local and national safety regulations, standards, and codes on construction sites. Regularly inspect and audit site conditions, equipment, and operations to ensure safe working environments. Implement corrective measures when violations are identified.
  2. Risk Assessments: Conduct hazard assessments and risk evaluations for ongoing construction projects. Recommend mitigation strategies for potential safety risks.
  3. Safety Training: Provide safety training and toolbox talks to construction workers, supervisors, and subcontractors. Maintain safety training records for all employees on the site.
  4. Incident Reporting and Investigation: Record and report safety-related incidents, accidents, and near misses. Lead investigations to determine the root causes of incidents and ensure preventive actions are implemented.
  5. Safety Protocol Implementation: Develop and implement safety procedures and emergency response plans. Oversee the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and ensure that all site workers are adequately equipped.
  6. Collaboration: Collaborate with site management and external regulatory agencies to ensure compliance with all safety regulations. Attend project meetings to provide updates on safety issues and concerns.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree or diploma in Occupational Health and Safety or related field (preferred).
  • Certifications in safety management (e.g., NEBOSH, OSHA, IOSH) required.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience as a Safety Officer in the construction industry.
  • Strong knowledge of construction safety regulations and practices.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and in a fast-paced environment.

Working Conditions:

Majority of time will be spent on construction sites. Exposure to various weather conditions and potentially hazardous environments. Some travel may be required between sites.
