RESPONSIBLE FOR: Research
INTERNAL LIASIONS: Liaising mainly with curatorial collection management education and marketing / communications department services
EXTERNAL LIAISONS: Liaising with other cultural institutions and authorities both at a national and international level: Other museums or cultural institutions, French museum partners in particular National institutions Academic local and international institutions Liaising with third party vendors and consultants
JOB OBJECTIVE: Working in close partnership with the Director of Curatorial & Collection Management, the Research Section Head is in charge of developing and managing academic research related to the museum in the fields of collection studies, conservation, preventive museum studies, and translation studies. The Research Section Head ensures the development of the museum's research on artwork material analysis and of the resource center.
MANAGERIAL ROLE:
Provide direction and manage employees in the Research Section.
Supervise, train, and oversee the management of Research Section Staff.
Ensure that the performance of various tasks and the conduct of the staff in the Research Section is in accordance with the policies and procedures of the Museum.
Communicate Museum Directorate and Departmental decisions to employees.
Formulate daily, weekly, and monthly plans and ensure alignment with Departmental and Museum objectives.
Provide performance management, career development guidance, and development of key performance indicators (KPIs) for direct reports, ensuring the development of all employees within the Section (in coordination with the Human Resources Department).
Define metrics for the measurement of the success of Research Section initiatives and projects; analyze data collected to determine the success of past and current initiatives and projects, and use recommendations to ensure that the design and implementation of future projects meets the goals and objectives. Prepare reports on the overall performance of the Section for the Director of Curatorial Department.
Development and management of the Research Section budget for input to the Curatorial & Collections budget.
ORGANIZATIONAL ROLE:
Working with the Director of Curatorial & Collection Management to develop medium and long-term strategic plans of the Department in line with the Museum's vision, mission, and strategic goals.
Establish Departmental goals, methods, policies, and procedures for implementing programs in alignment with the Sector and the Authority's mission and goals.
Review project proposals or plans to determine time requirements and funding limitations within the Department.
Create and foster collaborative working relationships among Department and Section employees.
FUNCTIONAL ROLE:
Implement Research Strategy as per the CCM Directorate.
Develop partnerships with similar institutions locally and internationally.
Develop and promote Research in the Museum.
Manage development and implementation of the Resource Center (including library collection management system and archives of the museum).
KNOWLEDGE:
Develop and promote Research in the Museum.
Manage development and implementation of the LAB.
Manage development and implementation of the Resource Center (including library collection management system and archives of the museum).
SKILLS:
Coordination of activities related to the collections in charge.
Adaptation of oral and written communication to transfer knowledge to international scientists, coworkers, other departments, the public, or donors.
Initiation and conduction of research and publication programs.
Language skills in English and Arabic.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT:
PhD/Equivalent in Art History, Archaeology, or Museology related to the field of expertise.
Graduated in Archaeology and Civilization field.
Graduated or trained in an international context related to the field of expertise.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
At least 8 years experience as Curator in a museum or museum-related institution.
Strong research experience in an international context linked with the field of expertise.
Extensive list of publications in the field including essays and articles in peer-reviewed journals.
Strong background of public talks, lectures, and presentations during international events.
Several years of teaching in academic institutions at university level.
