The Library & Learning Commons Department seeks an incumbent to provide effective support at the reference desk to assist students, faculty, and staff in locating appropriate information resources. Offers clerical and reference support to librarians and professionals.
This position is responsible for performing higher level paraprofessional functions and entry-level professional activities. Works closely with faculty, staff, and students and must be knowledgeable about print and electronic resources as well as reference tools.
Works under the direction of the Assistant Director of Public Services but is very autonomous when functioning at the service desk.
The Responsibilities
- Maintains daily library services operations and performs tasks within established guidelines and procedures in an independent manner.
- Assists students and faculty with the selection and creation of relevant materials for assignments.
- Provides instructions and technical support to library users in the use of library materials, computers, and equipment.
- Provides clerical and in-class support for the information literacy program.
- Under the supervision of librarians, drafts various brochures and bookmarks directed to the needs of different groups of users to explain reference and research tools.
- In cooperation with Technical Services personnel, helps to improve the accuracy of collection and catalog records.
- Assists librarians in implementing the instructional modules and instructing users in the use of online catalog and online databases.
- Participates in library programming committees, training, scheduling of classes, and special activities.
- Maintains library records, schedules, and daily statistics as required.
- Assists with compiling supply orders and collection development.
- Provides circulation services including creating reports on circulation activities and trains new employees on how to use the circulation module.
- Works with student workers and provides them with training, guidance, and feedback.
- Performs other relevant duties as needed and requested.
The Requirements
- Must possess a bachelor's degree in Library Science or relevant field and a minimum of 2 years of library experience or an equivalent combination of education, skill, or experience.
- Experience with using electronic resources and Information Technology skills.
- Willingness to work alone serving both male and female library users during library operation hours as needed.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and oral.
Other essential requirements:
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, and Outlook) or similar software.
- Desired or preferred requirements:
Bilingual English/Arabic
