Job description

Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Research Scientist to join the Khalifa Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (KCGEB) for a groundbreaking research project focused on genetic manipulation of primordial germ cells (PGCs) to modify plumage color in falcons. This project will use advanced CRISPR/Cas9 gene-editing technology to alter the melanin related genes, aiming to produce falcons with white or light-colored plumage. The project also involves building the capacity for PGC culture, gene editing, and breeding techniques at the Biology Department of UAE University.
This is a multidisciplinary project with a strong focus on genome editing, embryology, and avian biology, aimed at developing novel methods for breeding falcons with desired phenotypic traits.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Perform genome editing using the CRISPR/Cas9 system to target the MC1R gene in avian primordial germ cells (PGCs) to alter plumage color.
  2. Develop protocols for the isolation, culture, and transfection of PGCs from both chicken and falcon embryos.
  3. Conduct phenotypic and genetic screening of transgenic falcons to assess the success of gene modifications.
  4. Optimize methods for PGC cryopreservation and perform long-term storage of cultured cells.
  5. Perform laboratory tasks including DNA/RNA isolation, plasmid design, transfections, PCR, and gene expression analysis using techniques like Western blotting and flow cytometry.
  6. Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams of geneticists, biologists, and veterinarians to ensure the successful implementation of the project goals.
  7. Provide training to students and other researchers on the methodologies being developed.
  8. Ensure compliance with all biosafety and ethical protocols, including obtaining animal ethics approvals.
  9. Prepare regular reports and scientific publications related to the research outcomes.

Minimum Qualification:

  1. PhD in Molecular Biology, Genetics, Biotechnology, or a related field.
  2. Previous experience working with avian species, particularly chickens and/or falcons, in a research setting.
  3. Knowledge of melanin production and pigmentation pathways, particularly relating to the MC1R gene.
  4. Experience in cryopreservation techniques for germ cells or stem cells.
  5. Familiarity with FACS and flow cytometry for cell sorting and analysis.

Expected Skills:

  1. Proven experience with CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing technology.
  2. Hands-on experience with PGC isolation, cell culture, and transfection techniques, preferably in avian or related species.
  3. Strong knowledge of molecular biology techniques including DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, gene expression analysis, and Western blotting.
  4. Familiarity with embryology and PGC manipulation in birds or similar models (e.g., chicken or other avian species).
  5. Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to troubleshoot experimental issues.
  6. Strong communication and scientific writing skills, with experience in preparing reports and research publications.
  7. Ability to work both independently and in a collaborative team environment.
