Job Purpose
The position is responsible for the management of the non-performing borrowing relationships pertaining to Retail Banking borrowers assigned to the position. The objective is to reduce the NPLs as:
Key Accountabilities
Front-end: Main responsibility is to reduce the non-performing portfolio by recovering amounts due to the bank. This includes reducing the number of non-performing accounts as well as the amount of the non-performing portfolio as per the approved Balanced Scorecard for the Department.
Mid-range: To enhance recoveries for the bank by contacting and meeting customers, either directly or with the respective Relationship Managers, and negotiate repayment terms while enhancing the security position against outstanding debts. Further, work hand in hand with the internal & external lawyers for the legal cases against classified borrowers, in order to obtain attachment & sale of assets.
Deceased Account: To ensure communicating the same to AFNIC to book the death claim, follow up with operations to mark the account to the deceased category, and to get the needed documents from the hire/Company for the insurance company to pay off the liabilities.
Ex-staff: To ensure changing the conversion of the ex-staff to commercial rate and ensure the repayment mechanism for the balance outstanding.
Recommending and agreeing recovery strategies or restructuring and/or upgrading non-performing borrowers back to the retail portfolio, which may include 'nursing' when the bank decides to try and allow the customer to trade out of the problem. Recommending filing of legal cases against non-performing borrowers to the Credit Committee after analyzing the costs/benefits of litigation.
To ensure that all non-performing borrowers assigned to the position are under the spotlight and are regularly reviewed & followed. This includes past dues, overdrafts, and excesses over limits in the retail portfolio.
Other Accountabilities
Be alert to emerging weaknesses in the portfolio especially in the Watch and OLEM categories by monitoring past due/overdrafts, excesses over limits, and exceptions in documentation for accounts assigned.
To monitor the performance of the cases handed over to the debt collectors on a monthly basis to ensure maximum recoveries from the non-performing borrowers. Supervise and provide guidance for Police Actions taken against borrowers to achieve timely results.
Job Context
Main Objective is achieving the Bank’s objectives of recovering the non-performing portfolio of Retail Banking borrowers assigned to the position. The aim is to make contact, meet, and negotiate repayment terms with non-performing borrowers rated RR 14 to 21 and reduce the overall non-performing portfolio. Ensure that DPD 1-30, 31-60, 61-90 DPD and so on remain at the least and minimal migration to other buckets. Reduce non-performing portfolio and provisions held by way of making recoveries either by cash or by sale of assets and/or securities, by restructuring borrower facilities including and not limited to obtaining additional securities, and recommending change in risk rating to normal or performing. The role also involves managing, guiding, and motivating staff to ensure efficiency & productivity and results in line with Department target.
Education
Bachelor's Degree related to a business field such as accounting/economics/law.
Experience and Skills
Professional Qualifications: MBA in Finance, Accounting, Commerce or Banking / Banking Diploma / CA would be preferred. Advance level credit courses with International Banks or Recognised External Rating Agency.
Work Experience: Minimum 8 years banking or related experience of which 7 years in credit, remedial, work out experience with a reputable financial institution.
