Job Title: Kiswahili Language Lecturer or Senior Lecturer

Reporting Relationship: Coordinator, The African Languages and Translation Program

Location: The Africa Institute, Global Studies University, Sharjah, U.A.E

Expected Starting Date: August 2025

Job Status: Full-time

Role Purpose: Teaching Kiswahili language and developing teaching resources

Summary of the Position

GSU is seeking to hire a full-time Kiswahili language instructor for its short-term and regular courses given under its African Languages and Translation program. The instructor is expected to deliver engaging and interactive face-to-face and online Kiswahili language lessons to learners of varying proficiency levels in line with the program documents prepared by the institute. The ideal candidate will be able to use innovative teaching methods and digital tools to create an effective and enjoyable learning environment. They are also expected to assess learners’ progress and adapt teaching strategies to meet individual needs. Instructors are expected to teach 12 credit hours of classes per week in addition to being involved in the development of learning resources.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and deliver interactive, well-structured lessons tailored to varying proficiency levels
  • Incorporate cultural aspects of Kiswahili-speaking regions into lessons
  • Evaluate learners through quizzes and assignments
  • Provide constructive feedback and track learner progress
  • Foster a dynamic and inclusive face-to-face and virtual classroom environment
  • Encourage active participation and address individual learning needs
  • Collaborate with other instructors and the program coordinator to refine the curriculum and develop teaching materials
  • Integrate multimedia tools to enhance learning outcomes
  • Stay updated on best practices in language education

Required Education

  • MA or Ph.D. degree in Kiswahili or related field including second language teaching, education, linguistics, etc.
  • Formal training in language teaching programs (e.g. ACTFL, NCOLCTL, NARLC, or others)

Required Work Experience

  • Fluency in Kiswahili and strong English communication skills
  • A minimum proven experience of teaching Kiswahili for 5 years, with knowledge of adult education strategies
  • Experience in developing Kiswahili teaching materials
  • Additional proficiency in Arabic would be an advantage

Key Competencies

  • Proficiency in online teaching platforms and integration of multimedia tools into lessons
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively
