Job Description
Junior Engineers assist the vessel's Chief Engineer / 2nd Engineer and any other engineers who are on duty. The nature of the work takes place in the ship's hull, in the engine room. Junior Engineer will be supporting the operation of the main engines, the electrical generation, the steering mechanism, and the other major subsystems.
The Junior Engineer is responsible to the Second Engineer for normal maintenance duties and to the Chief Engineer for watch keeping duties.
The Junior Engineer reports to the Second Engineer and is responsible for the maintenance of machinery as assigned by the Second Engineer. He shall assist the Second Engineer in maintaining the Engine Room as instructed.
He shall keep the 4/8 watch or alternatively any other watch as assigned by the Second Engineer. While on watch, the Junior Engineer shall be under the direction of the senior engineer whose orders he shall carry out promptly and diligently.
Aside of the ER routine, he will be part of the support engineering to the Chief Officer whenever ballast operations are undertaken in accordance with the schedule prepared by the CE.
He will assist the other engineers as instructed by the Second Engineer.
The Junior Engineer will be assigned duties relating to bunkering by the Chief Engineer.
As instructed by the Second Engineer, the Junior Engineer will carry out the safety equipment maintenance.
The Junior Engineer shall report to the Chief Engineer and to the Second Engineer upon joining a vessel, and shall discuss with the officer being relieved (if applicable) the condition of the machinery and equipment for which he is responsible. He shall in the company of the officer being relieved inspect all the items for which he is responsible. He must report any deficiencies found to the Second Engineer.
