Roles and responsibilities
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of the fundamentals of Technical Safety & Loss Prevention engineering methodologies, software systems, and design practices as they relate to FEED, Detail Design, Construction, Commissioning, and plant Start-up.
  • Perform Safety screening of project scopes.
  • Hands-on experience of conducting Hazardous Area Classification, Safety layout Assessment, Emergency escape route assessment.
  • Experience in Fire engineering activities like Fire Zone determination, Firewater demand calculations and Firewater network hydraulics.
  • Participating and preparing reports for project HAZOP, HAZID, SIL studies, and other safety workshops when required.
  • Able to perform Physical Hazard Effects (PHE) modelling and able to review Quantitative Risk Assessments (QRA).
  • Experience in conducting F&G mapping.
  • Co-ordinating with other disciplines during all stages of design development, construction, pre-commissioning, and start-up.
  • Providing technical support to site as required.
  • Producing and reviewing specifications, data sheets, schedules, study reports, and design calculations; ensuring that they conform to engineering quality, competence, and project management systems.
  • Attend client meetings and communicate issues with lead engineer as required.
  • Ensure self-awareness of relevant regulatory framework, legislation changes, initiatives and industry technology developments.
  • Thorough awareness of international codes and standards.
  • Actively maintains own competence according to standards and pursues continuous professional development.
  • Must be willing to make occasional visits to Iraq.

Qualifications

  • BEng or equivalent with relevant experience
  • Chartered Engineer or recognized equivalent experience preferred
  • Experience of Concept / FEED / Detail Engineering project phases
  • 8-10 years relevant experience in the oil and gas industry
  • Previous experience of working in the Middle East would be an advantage

Desired candidate profile

  • Risk Assessment and Hazard Analysis: Ability to identify and assess potential risks in a work environment and implement mitigation strategies. Common techniques include Failure Mode Effects Analysis (FMEA), Hazard and Operability Study (HAZOP), and job hazard analysis (JHA).

  • Safety Regulations Knowledge: Familiarity with industry standards and regulations such as OSHA, NFPA, ISO 45001, and local safety codes. Ensuring the workplace complies with legal and safety requirements is essential.

  • Incident Investigation and Root Cause Analysis: Investigating accidents or near misses and identifying the root causes. Techniques like 5 Whys and Fishbone diagrams are used to uncover underlying issues.

  • Safety Audits and Inspections: Conducting regular inspections to identify safety hazards or non-compliance with safety procedures and regulations. This also includes conducting safety audits to ensure processes are effective.

  • Emergency Response Planning: Developing and implementing emergency response protocols for various scenarios such as fire, chemical spills, electrical accidents, etc.

  • Health and Environmental Safety: Knowledge of ergonomics, industrial hygiene, and environmental safety to protect workers from physical and health hazards.

  • Training and Awareness: Ability to design and deliver training programs on safety procedures, emergency protocols, and hazard identification to employees at all levels.

  • Problem-Solving and Critical Thinking: Strong analytical skills to address complex safety challenges and find effective solutions quickly.

  • Data Analysis and Reporting: Ability to analyze safety data and trends, preparing clear reports to present findings and make recommendations for improvements.

  • Project Management: Leading safety projects, managing timelines, budgets, and coordinating with various departments to ensure safety initiatives are executed.

  • Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication to ensure that safety protocols are clearly understood by employees, management, and regulatory bodies.

  • Continuous Improvement Mindset: Commitment to ongoing learning and improvement to stay updated with new safety technologies, regulations, and industry best practices.
