High School Student Counsellor

We are seeking dynamic and enthusiastic High School Student Counselors to join our dedicated team from August 2025.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced counselor who is passionate about education and is eager to contribute to the academic success of our students.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Embrace and encourage the ethos and standards of excellence as defined in the GEMS Core Values.
2. Establish procedures and time frames to provide students with academic, personal, social, emotional, and psychological counseling.
3. Work with new students to ensure a smooth adjustment to the school.
4. Provide students with guidance on admission to higher education institutions.
5. Organize and process recommendations for students to higher education institutions and provide assistance with application procedures.
6. Provide opportunities for students to take tests for admission to higher education institutions.
7. Maintain and update a list of colleges and universities that have accepted students from the school.
8. Liaise with the Librarian to provide an update on careers and college material.
9. In conjunction with the senior management team, organize and coordinate careers sessions with representatives from a range of professions.
10. Establish, maintain, and update a record of Alumni.
11. Establish procedures for securing external assistance for students with personal problems and emotional needs.
12. Work with the senior management team to develop experiences and activities that are beneficial for students’ holistic development and which promote responsibility, leadership skills, cooperation, and other personal and social skills.
13. Maintain student records on progress, achievements, activities, and interests.
14. Establish proactive guidelines and procedures to deal with bullying.
15. Establish and administer appropriate testing programs to evaluate student aptitude and achievement.
16. Establish systems to notify parents promptly about problems in class, with school work, or behavioral issues.
17. Ensure the GEMS policies, procedures, and codes of conduct are followed at all times.
18. Initiate effort and energy beyond the typical work day, where the tasks require additional commitment.
19. Attend staff meetings and serve on committees as required.
20. Perform other duties as requested by direct & dotted reporting line managers/supervisors.

• Excellent interpersonal skills and empathy. Able to build strong relationships with students and gain their trust. Understands the importance of confidentiality and discretion.
• GEMS Education is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all of its students and staff. A UK-enhanced DBS or equivalent police check is a pre-requisite for all appointments.

Specific qualifications required for this role:

• Teaching Credential/License

Additional requirements for this role:

• A Bachelor of Education degree, or an initial degree with specialism in Education, Psychology, or Counseling.
• Proven experience as a Counselor at the high school level, preferably within an American/IB curriculum school.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
• Ability to build strong relationships with students, parents, and colleagues.
• A strong desire to continually improve their practice.
