Job description

English Teacher Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of English language development, language structure, use, and real-life application.
  • Develop in each student skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing that are fundamental to effective communication and literate citizenship.
  • Ability to provide an active and communicative approach to learning English with clarity, accuracy, and relevance to culture.
  • Knowledge of and the ability to implement effective and inclusive teaching and learning processes, including the use of learning technology and assessment, to establish a challenging learning environment in which learners are encouraged to work towards the attainment of their potential.
  • Experience with second language learners.
  • Develop an appreciation of good literature of all types.
  • Motivate students to read widely for information and recreation.
  • Develop standards for critical judgment of written and oral communications transmitted by mass media.
  • Discover and develop special talents of students in the field of English to prepare each student to meet the California & Common Core standards.
  • Teach content and skills in English language, literature, composition, reading, and journalism to secondary school students, utilizing a curriculum designated by IPS.
  • Adapt English material and methods to develop relevant sequential assignments and lesson plans that guide and challenge students.
  • Develop lesson plans and supplementary materials compatible with the division’s basic instructional philosophy and congruent with California & Common Core standards; provide individualized and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student and subgroups of students.
  • Evaluate each student’s progress in meeting the course standards for English skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing).

Teaching Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Teach all areas related to the subject and relevant curriculum.
  • Establish and enforce rules for behavior, policies, and procedures to maintain order among students.
  • Observe and evaluate students’ performance, behavior, and social development.
  • Instruct students individually and in groups, adapting teaching methods to meet students' varying needs and interests.
  • Provide various materials and resources for students to explore, manipulate, and use in learning activities.
  • Plan and conduct activities for a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and work time that provides students with opportunities to observe, question, and investigate.
  • Confer with parents or guardians, other teachers, counselors, and administrators to resolve students' behavioral and academic problems.
  • Prepare students for later grades by encouraging them to explore learning opportunities and to persevere with challenging tasks.
  • Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects and communicate those objectives to students.
  • Prepare and implement remedial programs for students requiring extra help.
  • Meet with parents and guardians to discuss their student's progress and to determine their priorities for their students and their resource needs.
  • Prepare objectives and outlines for courses of study, following curriculum guidelines or requirements of ADEK/KHDA and schools.
  • Guide and counsel students with adjustment and/or academic problems or special academic interests.
  • Identify students showing signs of emotional, developmental, or health-related problems and discuss them with supervisors, parents or guardians, and the SEN Department.
  • Maintain accurate and complete student records and prepare reports on students and activities, as required by ADEK/KHDA and the School.
  • Assess students by conducting quizzes, tests, projects, etc.
  • Prepare, administer, and grade tests and assignments to evaluate students' progress.
  • Meet with other professionals to discuss individual students' needs and progress.
  • Confer with other staff members to plan and schedule lessons promoting learning, following approved curricula.
  • Administer standardized ability and achievement tests and interpret results to determine students' developmental levels and needs.
  • Prepare for assigned classes and show written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate supervisors.
  • Utilize different types of technology in the classroom to create meaningful learning experiences for students of all ages.
  • Plan and supervise class projects, field trips, visits by guests, or other experiential activities, and guide students in learning from those activities.
  • Attend professional meetings, including staff meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops, to maintain and improve performance and serve on committees as required.
  • Perform break duties as scheduled by the section’s administrators.
  • Perform administrative duties such as assisting in school libraries, play areas, and cafeteria monitoring and during the bus timings.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues and superiors.

Specific qualifications required for this role:

  • Teaching Credential/License.
  • TESL/TEFL Certificate.

Additional requirements for this role:

  • Bachelor’s degree with a valid teaching certificate/license in content area and/or related field.
  • A minimum of two years of current, full-time related teaching experience.
  • Teaching experience in an American curriculum school is preferred.
  • IELTS or TOEFL for non-native teachers (6.5 for subjects taught in English & 7.5 for English subjects).
  • Experience with current best practices, current teaching materials, and current instructional strategies, as well as recent professional growth activities.
