Job description

The English Mentor will deliver high-quality teaching and learning while fostering creativity, critical thinking, and independent learning. Reporting to the Vice Principal Secondary, the mentor will collaborate with the English Curriculum Leader and colleagues to implement a broad and engaging curriculum. The role also includes contributing to extra-curricular activities, supporting the professional development of peers, and creating a positive and inclusive learning environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver engaging and differentiated lessons aligned with the English curriculum and the school’s vision.
  • Collaborate with the English Curriculum Leader and colleagues to implement the Citizens Learning Framework.
  • Incorporate EAL strategies to support language learners effectively.
  • Ensure continuity and progression in learning through tailored lesson plans and resources.
  • Share best practices and innovative teaching strategies with the team.

Assessment and Feedback:

  • Conduct regular formative and summative assessments to monitor progress.
  • Provide constructive feedback in line with the school’s assessment policy.
  • Analyse learner data to inform teaching practices and improve outcomes.
  • Actively participate in departmental assessment reviews and make necessary adjustments.

Department Collaboration and Professional Development:

  • Participate in departmental meetings and share innovative ideas.
  • Model exemplary teaching practices in classroom management and lesson delivery.
  • Mentor colleagues and assist in their professional development.
  • Collaborate with the Inclusion Team to support learners with special educational needs.

Classroom Management and Behaviour:

  • Foster a positive and inclusive classroom culture.
  • Effectively manage learner behaviour using the Behaviour for Learning Framework.
  • Address academic and behavioural challenges, involving senior leadership when needed.
  • Maintain accurate records of learner behaviour and interventions using iSAMS and CPOMS.

Extra-Curricular Contribution:

  • Lead or support extra-curricular activities (ICAs) and English-related clubs.
  • Inspire learners to engage in English language and literature beyond the classroom.
  • Contribute to school-wide events and initiatives.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • A degree in English, Education, or a related field.
  • Valid teaching qualification with a minimum of three years teaching experience.
  • Experience with the UK National Curriculum is preferred.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in IT to enhance teaching and learning.
  • Experience in an international school setting is an advantage.
