Job description

JOB PURPOSE:

Contribute to development of new and improve existing cell and other equipment designs, support Process Development, Process Control and Engineering in decision making by doing mathematical modelling to achieve the best possible KPIs with optimal costs.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  1. Designs and develops high amperage reduction cell technologies by using thermo-electric, thermo-mechanical, electro-magnetic, MHD and CFD models and validates the models.
  2. Optimizes existing reduction cell technologies, improving cell performance to achieve excellent KPI's by using modelling and analytical tools.
  3. Models of other equipment used in smelter, carbon, cast house or alumina technology.
  4. Interacts with Technical Consultants, Material Suppliers, Operations, Process Control, Process Development, Engineering and IT departments for the various modelling activities.
  5. Identifies software, hardware resource requirement and develop in-house thermal, electrical, mechanical, CFD and magnetic modelling capabilities.
  6. Conducts measurement campaigns on existing cells improving the model's accuracy.
  7. Develops and trains fresh National graduate trainee in the modelling field in order to strengthen the company's technical base.
  8. Keeps abreast of technological developments by attending technical seminars, symposia, reading specialized technical literature, co-ordinating effectively with technical consultants, academics, universities, and suppliers so that company remains competitive by using best ideas / practices.

AUTHORITY/ DECISION MAKING:

  1. Choosing effective solutions for problem solving. Focusing on opportunities to introduce new technologies and innovations, to improve existing technologies.
  2. Cascading improvements in cell design and materials selection to the new or existing technologies in order to make gains in productivity, specific energy and cost-effectiveness.
  3. Making conclusions about impact of changes in design, operational or technological parameters on cell performance.
  4. Subject to managerial control and review of results.

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS:

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor's degree in Metallurgy/Material Science/Mechanical Engineering or equivalent discipline from a recognized institution/ university.
  2. Master's degree in Metallurgy/Material Science/Mechanical Engineering or equivalent discipline from a recognized institution/ university.

Minimum Experience:

  1. Three (3) years relevant work experience as modelling engineer.
  2. One (1) year relevant work experience as modelling engineer in aluminium reduction related area.

Skills:

  1. Comprehensive and specialized knowledge of all aspects of aluminium production.
  2. Good skills in documentation, data analysis, data evaluation and validation methodologies.
  3. High self-confidence, professional work ethics and be an open-minded, independent-thinking with strong commercial acumen.
  4. Team player with good communication skills.
  5. Must be experienced user of at least one CAE FEM or CFD commercial software package (preferably ANSYS).
  6. Good technical, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  7. Experienced of MS Office tools such as MS Word, Excel and Power Point etc.
  8. Good report writing and presentation skills.
