Job description

Basic Purpose of the role:

The EEG Technician is responsible for proactively functioning as a resource person to physicians, family members, and hospital staff as well as preparing patients and performing Electroencephalograms, Ambulatory EEG s and other tests within their scope of practice. The Technician will ensure the delivery of International standards of care in accordance with established National and International practices, policies and procedures.

Key responsibilities of the role:

  1. Contribute to developing Allied service standards and ensure they are consistently met.
  2. Act as a role model and deliver high clinical and operational performance standards by developing and supporting the Allied Health Service team.
  3. Collaborates with nursing and allied health staff at all levels, interdisciplinary teams, executive officers and other stakeholders in the development, implementation, and evaluation of programs and services.
  4. Market, promote and profile the service to patients, referrers and the general public and to undertake business development activities.
  5. Uses unit resources in a cost effective and responsible manner.
  6. Actively participates in the process for ensuring the organisation achieves and maintains JCIA status or other rehabilitation accreditations.
  7. Ensures the reporting of all adverse events, incidents and near misses.
  8. Contributes to investigations of complaints and incidents and draft responses as required in a timely manner.
  9. Contributes to the monitoring of key performance indicators and developing action plans as required.
  10. Responsible for the implementation and delivery of age appropriate patient care congruent with the mission, vision and values of the organisation.
  11. Competently performs all technical aspects of:
  • electroencephalogram (EEG)
  • nerve conduction studies (NCS)
  • electromyogram (EMG)
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge in the operation and troubleshooting of equipment.
  • Perform pre-test consultations and obtains medical history of patient and summarise relevant data.
  • Prepare patient for testing and explain procedure.
  • Carry an active caseload as required by service demand.
  • Operates independently under broad direction to promote a co-operative and effective environment for patient care within the facility.
  • Demonstrates clinical expertise in specialty.
  • Utilises evidence-based practice to develop and implement standards that guide practice improvement initiatives.
  • Other responsibilities:

    1. Participates in quality management activities as assigned and at a personal level of accountability, i.e. accreditation process.
    2. Evaluates factors related to safety, outcomes, effectiveness, cost, and social impact when developing and implementing practice innovations.
    3. Participate in the Hospital s Quality and Audit Programmes and evaluate the impact of new practices.
    4. Actively participates with the Senior EEG Technician in staff development activities consistent with service delivery and individual learning goals.
    5. Maintains a primary role in departmental and interdepartmental related educational activities.
    6. Maintains a significant role in the creation and execution of Hospital programmes, hospital quality development, policy and procedures and competencies.
    7. Actively participates in the Clinical Competency Programme.
