Job description

Overview: The Cardiac Surgeon is a highly specialized medical doctor who performs surgeries on the heart and major blood vessels. This role requires expertise in diagnosing and treating a wide range of cardiac conditions, such as coronary artery disease, heart valve issues, congenital heart defects, and heart failure. The cardiac surgeon works in collaboration with other healthcare professionals to provide the highest standard of care for patients requiring surgical intervention for heart diseases.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Preoperative Assessment: Conduct comprehensive evaluations of patients' medical history and perform necessary diagnostic tests (e.g., echocardiograms, CT scans, blood work) to assess heart function and determine the need for surgery. Explain the risks and benefits of the proposed surgical procedures to patients and their families, answering any questions and ensuring informed consent. Develop individualized treatment plans based on patient conditions, including selecting appropriate surgical options such as coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), valve repair or replacement, and heart transplantation.
  • Surgical Procedures: Perform complex heart surgeries such as coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), valve repairs/replacements, heart transplants, and other cardiac surgeries. Utilize advanced surgical techniques, including minimally invasive surgery, to improve patient outcomes and recovery times when applicable. Ensure sterile techniques and patient safety protocols are followed during surgeries.
  • Postoperative Care: Oversee patient recovery in the hospital and ICU following surgery, closely monitoring vital signs, heart function, and potential complications. Provide detailed guidance for postoperative care, including managing pain, medications, and addressing any concerns regarding recovery or complications. Regularly assess the patient’s recovery and adjust the care plan as necessary, working with a team of cardiologists, anesthesiologists, and ICU specialists.
  • Patient Education and Communication: Educate patients and their families about the surgical procedures, recovery process, lifestyle changes, and heart disease prevention strategies. Provide emotional support to patients before and after surgery, helping them understand their condition and the impact of the surgery on their health and quality of life. Follow up with patients post-discharge to monitor progress and schedule necessary check-ups.
  • Collaboration with Medical Team: Work alongside cardiologists, anesthesiologists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive care for heart patients. Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, case reviews, and clinical discussions to continuously improve patient care. Consult with other specialists as needed to address any co-existing health conditions that may impact the success of surgery.
  • Research and Continuous Learning: Stay current on the latest developments in cardiac surgery techniques, technologies, and treatment options. Contribute to research, clinical trials, and publications in the field of cardiac surgery, advancing the knowledge and practice of heart surgery. Mentor and train medical students, residents, and other junior doctors.
  • Emergency Situations: Respond quickly to cardiac emergencies, including performing life-saving procedures in acute situations (e.g., heart attacks, traumatic heart injuries, etc.). Provide immediate surgical intervention for patients requiring urgent cardiac care.

Desired Candidate Profile:

Qualifications:

  • Education: Medical degree (MD or equivalent). Completion of a surgical residency program, followed by specialized training in cardiac surgery (Cardiothoracic Surgery Fellowship). Board certification in cardiac surgery (or equivalent, depending on the country).
  • Licensing: Current, valid medical license to practice as a cardiac surgeon in the specified region or country. Certification in Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) and Basic Life Support (BLS).
  • Experience: Extensive experience in performing a range of cardiac surgeries, with proficiency in both open and minimally invasive procedures. Demonstrated successful surgical outcomes and patient care.
  • Skills and Competencies: Expertise in diagnosing and treating a wide variety of heart conditions requiring surgical intervention. Strong manual dexterity, precision, and problem-solving skills. Ability to work effectively in high-pressure and fast-paced environments. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact with patients, families, and the medical team. Strong leadership and decision-making abilities, especially in emergency and critical care situations.
  • Personal Attributes: Compassionate and empathetic, with a strong commitment to improving patients' lives. Detail-oriented with exceptional surgical skills. Ability to manage stress and remain calm in high-pressure environments.
