Environmental Laboratory Chemist

This is an exciting opportunity to join the growing environmental business line within Fugro Iraq as an Environmental Laboratory Chemist. This position is based in Basra, Iraq, on a rotational basis, and you will work under the supervision of the Environmental Laboratory Manager.

Job Description:

1. Perform organic and inorganic testing on GC-FID, Headspace GC-MS, GC-MS/MS, ICP-OES, and IC for water and soil samples to detect and quantify hydrocarbons, volatiles, pesticides, etc.
2. Hands-on experience in collection, preservation, and transportation of water samples to maintain their integrity.
3. Develop new methods and protocols to enhance laboratory capabilities for water and soil samples.
4. Conduct validation and measurement uncertainty studies for organic and inorganic parameters in the lab.
5. Implement quality control procedures to ensure the accuracy and reliability of analytical analyses.
6. Hands-on experience in preparing and storing standard solutions and other reagents required for organic, inorganic, and wet chemistry analysis in water and soil samples.
7. Perform daily, weekly, and monthly checks as per ISO/APHA methods.
8. Conduct QA/QC checks and standardization as directed by the section in-charge or Lab Manager.
9. Calibrate and verify instruments internally as instructed by the section in-charge or Lab Manager.
10. Perform routine wet chemistry analysis for parameters such as BOD, COD, ammonia, sulfide, TDS, etc.
11. Maintain a clean laboratory environment at all times.
12. Adhere to international standards ISO/IEC 17025, local government requirements, GLP, and other relevant laboratory safety standards.
13. Conduct risk assessments to identify potential sources of contamination and develop mitigation strategies.
14. Notify the Lab Manager of non-conformances and assist with follow-up actions.

Required Skills:

1. BS/MSc in Chemistry.
2. Minimum 2 years experience in the Analytical Laboratory.
3. Should have excellent instrument knowledge.
4. Should have knowledge in international standard ISO/IEC 17025:2017.
5. Basic computer knowledge in Microsoft Excel & Word.
