Roles and Responsibilities

The Pharmacist role is to serve patients by preparing medications, giving pharmacological information to the multidisciplinary healthcare team, and monitoring patient drug therapies.

What You Will Do:

  • Reviews prescriptions issued by the Physician or other authorized prescribers to assure accuracy and appropriateness of medication, and determine formulas and ingredients needed.
  • Prepares medications by reviewing and interpreting physician prescriptions.
  • Dispenses medications by compounding, packaging, and labeling pharmaceuticals.
  • Directs pharmacy workers engaged in mixing, packaging, and labeling pharmaceuticals.
  • Answers questions and provides information to pharmacy customers on drug interactions, side effects, dosage, and storage of pharmaceuticals.
  • Maintains established procedures concerning quality assurance, security of controlled substances, and disposal of drugs designated as hazardous waste.
  • Enters data such as patient name, prescribed medication, and cost to maintain pharmacy files, charge system, and inventory.
  • Assesses medications to determine identity, purity, and strength.
  • Trains other medical personnel on matters pertaining to the pharmacy.
  • Communicates with and treats pharmacy’s customers.
  • Works effectively with other healthcare employees, managers, and departments.
  • Complies with local drug regulatory laws as regulated by the country of operation, including monitoring nursing unit inspections, maintaining records for controlled substances, removing outdated and damaged drugs from the pharmacy inventory, supervising the work results of support personnel, maintaining current registration, studying existing and new legislation, anticipating legislation, and advising management on needed actions.
  • Protects patients and technicians by adhering to infection-control protocols.
  • Maintains a safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations.
  • Maintains pharmacological knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, and participating in professional societies.

What Qualifies You For The Role:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Pharmacology from a recognized institution.
  • UAE License or eligibility as a Pharmacist.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in a similar role.

Desired Candidate Profile

  • Dispensing Medications:

    • Review and verify prescription orders from healthcare providers.
    • Dispense prescribed medications to patients, ensuring proper dosage and usage instructions.
    • Prepare compounded medications, such as creams, ointments, or custom medications, if required.
    • Ensure that the correct medication is given, checking for potential drug interactions, allergies, or contraindications.
  • Patient Counseling and Education:

    • Educate patients about the proper use of prescribed medications, including how to take them, potential side effects, and interactions with other drugs or foods.
    • Advise patients on lifestyle changes or over-the-counter (OTC) medications for managing conditions like pain, cold, allergies, or digestive issues.
    • Offer advice on managing chronic conditions, such as diabetes, hypertension, or asthma, including proper medication adherence and symptom management.
  • Medication Therapy Management (MTM):

    • Conduct thorough reviews of a patient’s medication regimen, identifying any potential issues such as polypharmacy, interactions, or ineffective treatments.
    • Provide recommendations to physicians on optimizing drug therapy, including changes in medication, dosage adjustments, or alternative treatments.
    • Monitor and assess the effectiveness of medications, making adjustments as necessary in collaboration with healthcare providers.
  • Pharmacy Operations:

    • Ensure the safe and accurate storage of medications, including controlled substances, and ensure adherence to legal and regulatory requirements.
    • Keep accurate records of prescriptions, medication dispensing, and patient consultations.
    • Manage inventory, track medication stock levels, and reorder medications as necessary to prevent shortages.
    • Oversee the preparation and maintenance of medication doses and packaging, ensuring everything complies with health regulations.
  • Drug Information and Safety:

    • Stay up-to-date with the latest pharmaceutical developments, including new drugs, treatment protocols, and safety alerts from regulatory bodies.
    • Advise healthcare providers on drug information, such as proper drug selection, dosage recommendations, and potential side effects.
    • Monitor for potential drug recalls, warnings, or safety issues and take appropriate actions to protect patients.
  • Immunizations and Health Screenings:

    • Administer immunizations, such as flu shots, travel vaccines, and others, as per local regulations and guidelines.
    • Conduct health screenings to identify potential health risks and provide recommendations for further action or treatment.
  • Clinical Collaboration:

    • Work closely with doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to ensure coordinated care for patients.
    • Participate in interdisciplinary rounds, providing insights into medication management, therapeutic drug monitoring, and potential drug interactions.
    • Actively engage in patient care team discussions, offering recommendations on medication adjustments or alternative therapies.
  • Regulatory Compliance:

    • Adhere to national, state, and local regulations and laws governing pharmacy practice, including controlled substance handling and patient confidentiality.
    • Maintain proper documentation, including prescription records and any necessary legal forms.
    • Ensure that pharmacy practices align with professional standards and ethical guidelines.
