Job description

Roles and Responsibilities

A Design Engineer is responsible for creating, developing, and optimizing designs for products, systems, or structures, ensuring they meet both functional and aesthetic requirements. They work in various industries, including manufacturing, construction, automotive, aerospace, and electronics. The role typically involves applying engineering principles to design, prototype, test, and refine solutions to meet specific project or product goals while adhering to cost, time, and quality constraints.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Design and Development:
    1. Conceptualization: Develop and create innovative design concepts based on project specifications, client needs, and market trends.
    2. Detailed Design: Produce detailed technical drawings, models, and specifications using CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks, CATIA).
    3. Prototyping: Create prototypes or initial models to test design concepts and functionality before final production.
    4. Design Optimization: Refine designs to improve performance, manufacturability, and cost-effectiveness. Evaluate designs for efficiency, safety, and sustainability.
  2. Technical Analysis and Problem Solving:
    1. Material Selection: Select appropriate materials based on design requirements, cost constraints, and environmental considerations.
    2. Stress and Load Analysis: Perform engineering calculations to ensure the design can withstand required loads, forces, or environmental conditions.
    3. Simulation and Testing: Use simulation tools (e.g., ANSYS, MATLAB) to test and validate designs virtually before physical production or construction.
    4. Troubleshooting: Resolve any design-related issues that arise during testing or production.
  3. Collaboration and Communication:
    1. Team Collaboration: Work closely with other engineers, project managers, and designers to ensure designs meet project goals, timelines, and budgets.
    2. Client Interaction: Communicate with clients or stakeholders to understand their requirements, present design solutions, and incorporate feedback.
    3. Cross-Functional Collaboration: Coordinate with other departments such as manufacturing, procurement, or quality control to ensure design feasibility and compliance.
  4. Compliance and Documentation:
    1. Regulatory Standards: Ensure designs comply with relevant industry standards, codes, and regulations (e.g., safety standards, environmental laws).
    2. Documentation: Maintain comprehensive records of design specifications, revisions, test results, and approvals for future reference and audits.
  5. Project Management:
    1. Timeline Management: Manage design schedules, ensuring designs are completed on time and within the project's scope.
    2. Cost Management: Estimate costs for materials, labor, and equipment required for design execution, ensuring designs fit within budget constraints.
    3. Quality Control: Ensure designs meet required quality standards and perform inspections during various phases of the design process.

Desired Candidate Profile

  1. Develop and execute stormwater management plans, including the design and analysis of stormwater drainage systems, flood control solutions, and water quality measures.
  2. Conduct hydrologic and hydraulic modeling to simulate stormwater runoff, flooding scenarios, and drainage network performance.
  3. Perform site assessments, collect relevant data, and evaluate existing stormwater infrastructure.
  4. Create design drawings, reports, and technical documentation for stormwater infrastructure, including storm drains, culverts, and retention ponds.
  5. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to integrate stormwater solutions into larger site development projects.
  6. Ensure compliance with local regulations, including permitting and approvals processes.
  7. Develop designs that adhere to the quality standards, ensuring compliance with the company's QA/QC processes.

Qualifications

  1. Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a related field. A Master’s degree is a plus.
  2. 5 to 8 years of experience in stormwater modeling and design.
  3. Proficiency in hydraulic modeling software such as SWMM, InfoWorks ICM, and AutoCAD Civil 3D.
  4. Strong understanding of hydrology, hydraulics, and stormwater regulations.
  5. Excellent communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
  6. Ability to work on multiple projects and meet deadlines with attention to detail.
