About the Job
The Director of Technical Services & Engineering is responsible for leading the overall strategy, management, and execution of the organization’s technical services, maintenance, and engineering operations. This role ensures the efficient functioning of all engineering systems, infrastructure, and equipment to maintain operational excellence and safety. The Director oversees the development, implementation, and optimization of technical policies, procedures, and standards to meet both regulatory requirements and the company’s strategic objectives. Additionally, this position plays a key role in project management, driving innovation, and implementing cost-effective engineering solutions.
The Director collaborates with cross-functional teams, including operations, facilities, and safety departments, to align technical services with broader business goals. They manage a team of engineering professionals, providing guidance, training, and performance evaluation to foster a high-performing technical team. The role also involves budget planning, resource allocation, and vendor management to ensure seamless technical service delivery. This position requires strong leadership, strategic thinking, and technical expertise to enhance productivity, sustainability, and quality across the organization.
Roles, Responsibilities, and Duties
Strategic Leadership & Planning
• Develop the technical services and engineering roadmap, focusing on innovative engineering solutions, maintenance strategies, and infrastructure development aligned with the organization’s growth targets.
• Set strategic objectives for the department, including service quality, operational efficiency, cost reduction, and sustainability goals, ensuring these are integrated into the overall corporate strategy.
• Lead strategic planning meetings to forecast future technical needs, budgeting requirements, capacity expansion, and resource management.
• Evaluate emerging technologies and trends to enhance engineering capabilities and identify potential areas for process optimization and technical advancement.
Operational Oversight
• Ensure all engineering systems, infrastructure, and equipment are operating efficiently, minimizing downtime and maximizing productivity.
• Establish a robust maintenance management system that includes preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance programs, ensuring adherence to schedules and regulatory standards.
• Implement operational excellence programs such as Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) or Reliability-Centered Maintenance (RCM) to improve overall equipment effectiveness (OEE).
• Create and maintain comprehensive maintenance records and technical documentation, providing data for audits, compliance checks, and internal performance evaluations.
• Regularly inspect facilities and infrastructure to identify potential risks, safety hazards, or compliance issues, implementing corrective measures as needed.
Project Management
• Lead the planning, design, execution, and commissioning of engineering projects, managing timelines, budgets, scope, and stakeholder expectations.
• Conduct feasibility studies, technical assessments, and risk analysis for proposed projects, ensuring project viability and alignment with company objectives.
• Coordinate with cross-functional teams, including procurement, finance, and operations, to align project activities with overall business goals.
• Monitor project progress, implement quality control measures, and ensure all technical specifications and safety standards are met.
• Prepare detailed project reports, tracking milestones, budgets, resource allocation, and identifying any deviations from the plan.
Team Leadership & Development
• Lead, mentor, and manage a diverse team of engineers, technicians, and maintenance personnel, promoting a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous learning.
• Set individual and team performance goals, conduct regular performance reviews, provide feedback, and identify areas for training and development.
• Encourage innovation and creativity within the team by fostering a problem-solving mindset and implementing lean methodologies to improve productivity.
• Create career development plans for team members, providing opportunities for skill enhancement, professional certifications, and role advancements.
• Establish clear roles, responsibilities, and communication channels within the team to enhance operational efficiency and clarity.
Budget & Resource Management
• Develop and oversee the department's budget, managing financial performance, analyzing variances, and implementing cost-control measures.
• Prepare capital expenditure (CapEx) proposals for major technical projects, infrastructure upgrades, or equipment acquisition, presenting the business case to senior management.
• Optimize the utilization of engineering resources, ensuring effective deployment of manpower, tools, equipment, and technology.
• Negotiate with suppliers, vendors, and contractors to obtain high-quality services and equipment at competitive rates, managing vendor relationships and contracts effectively.
• Monitor expenditures, approve purchase requisitions, and ensure that all resource allocations support technical and operational needs.
Policy Development & Compliance
• Develop, update, and enforce technical service policies, safety protocols, engineering procedures, and operational standards.
• Establish quality assurance measures and maintenance procedures, ensuring compliance with local, national, and international engineering standards and codes.
• Lead safety initiatives, including risk assessments, safety audits, and implementation of corrective actions, ensuring compliance with occupational health and safety regulations.
• Serve as the primary contact for regulatory bodies, ensuring timely and accurate reporting, permitting, and documentation for all technical operations.
• Develop standard operating procedures (SOPs) and maintenance schedules, ensuring that technical operations meet compliance and quality benchmarks.
Stakeholder Engagement
• Act as the main liaison between technical services and key stakeholders, including executive management, clients, regulatory authorities, contractors, and suppliers.
• Provide technical insights and recommendations to executive management during strategic planning, operational reviews, and decision-making processes.
• Build strong relationships with clients, understanding their technical requirements, addressing concerns, and ensuring the quality of services provided.
• Coordinate with internal departments such as HR, Finance, Operations, and IT to ensure that engineering services align with broader organizational initiatives and client requirements.
• Facilitate regular meetings, presentations, and updates to stakeholders on technical performance, project status, maintenance schedules, and compliance adherence.
Innovation & Continuous Improvement
• Lead initiatives to identify and implement cutting-edge technologies, automation tools, and best practices in engineering and maintenance.
• Promote energy efficiency, renewable energy solutions, and green building practices, aligning technical services with the organization’s sustainability goals.
• Establish a culture of continuous improvement through Kaizen, Six Sigma, or other lean methodologies, enhancing technical processes, service delivery, and operational efficiency.
• Use data analytics and performance metrics to identify trends, root causes of issues, and opportunities for process optimization or cost reduction.
• Stay updated on industry trends, emerging technologies, and regulatory changes, implementing best practices to maintain competitive advantage.
