Roles and responsibilities

Job Title: Database Administrator
Job Location: Dubai/Abu Dhabi
Job Role

  • Minimum 10 years hands-on experience as DBA.
  • Should be Independent and hands-on.

Technical Skills
Proven skills and expertise in:

  • Database Management Systems (DBMS): Proficiency in popular DBMSs like Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL, and MongoDB.
  • SQL and Query Optimization: Strong SQL skills for querying databases and understanding optimization techniques.
  • Backup and Recovery: Knowledge of backup strategies, disaster recovery planning, and tools for data restoration.
  • Performance Tuning: Ability to analyze and improve database performance through indexing, query optimization, and resource allocation.
  • Security Management: Understanding of database security practices, user roles, permissions, and data encryption.
  • Data Modelling and Design: Skills in designing normalized database schemas and understanding data relationships.
  • Scripting and Automation: Proficiency in scripting languages (e.g. Python, PowerShell) to automate tasks.
  • Replication and Clustering: Knowledge of database replication, high availability solutions, and clustering technologies.
  • Cloud Database Management: Familiarity with cloud services (e.g., AWS, Azure, Oracle) and managing databases in cloud environments.
  • Banner SIS and Oracle Fusion ERP - installation, configurations and access management including upgrades, patching.

Certifications beneficial are

  • Oracle Certified Professional (OCP)
  • Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate
  • AWS Certified Database Specialty
  • MongoDB Certified DBA

Desired candidate profile
  • Database Installation and Configuration:

    • Install and configure database management systems (DBMS) like Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL, or NoSQL databases (e.g., MongoDB).
    • Set up initial database environments, configure storage, manage database files, and allocate resources (memory, CPU, disk).
  • Database Design and Architecture:

    • Collaborate with developers and system architects to design efficient database schemas, including tables, relationships, indexes, and views.
    • Create and optimize data models to ensure efficient querying and reporting.
    • Work on database normalization and denormalization techniques to ensure optimal performance for transactional and analytical systems.
  • Database Security:

    • Implement security measures to ensure data integrity, including setting up user accounts, roles, and permissions.
    • Configure and manage encryption mechanisms, both for data at rest and in transit.
    • Apply security patches and monitor for vulnerabilities to keep databases secure from unauthorized access.
  • Backup and Recovery:

    • Develop and implement database backup strategies, including full, incremental, and differential backups.
    • Set up and monitor disaster recovery plans, ensuring that databases can be restored quickly in case of failure.
    • Regularly test backup and recovery procedures to ensure their effectiveness.
  • Performance Tuning and Optimization:

    • Monitor database performance using tools and techniques to identify and resolve bottlenecks or inefficiencies.
    • Optimize queries, indexes, and database configurations for faster data retrieval and processing.
    • Tune database parameters, such as buffer cache sizes, I/O operations, and query optimization strategies, to meet business performance requirements.
  • Database Maintenance:

    • Perform routine database maintenance tasks like updating statistics, rebuilding indexes, and optimizing queries.
    • Clean up redundant data, manage archiving processes, and ensure the database doesn’t grow uncontrollably.
    • Monitor database health and resolve issues like data corruption, deadlocks, and system errors.
  • Database Migration and Upgrades:

    • Plan and execute database migrations, such as upgrading DBMS versions, moving databases to different hardware or cloud environments, or transitioning between database systems.
    • Ensure minimal downtime and data loss during migrations by thoroughly testing and validating the migration process.
