JOB DESCRIPTION

The Consultant Physician is responsible for leading and supervising the delivery of high-quality evidence-based care; effectively and efficiently diagnosing, managing and treating all patients placed under the post holder’s care. The Consultant Physician is expected to be an example of clinical excellence within his or her specialty and to provide leadership and training for junior medical staff.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Supports, implements, and follows all hospital, departmental and divisional initiatives, policies and procedures
  2. Helps lead and implement the organization’s performance management system, including peer review and the productivity and utilization review processes
  3. Participates in the organization’s performance management system, including peer review and the productivity and utilization review processes
  4. Assists with scheduling and supports the Division Chief in ensuring that adequate medical coverage is provided within the Division at all times
  5. Attends Divisional meetings as required
  6. Assists the Division Chief in the recruitment of new medical staff when appropriate
  7. Assumes other administrative or clinical duties as requested by the Division Chief
  8. Diagnoses and treats patients according to established standards of best practice for the post holder’s specialty. The Consultant Physician’s clinical duties include but are not limited to the following:
  9. Oversees the clinical activities of the junior medical staff and assumes responsibility for the care they provide
  10. Complies with all established hospital policies regarding admissions, consultations, daily patient care, surgical procedures, discharge protocols, outpatient and follow up practices
  11. Practices appropriate utilization of the organization’s resources
  12. Leads ward rounds; reassesses both inpatients and outpatients on a regular basis, in line with established best practice
  13. Accurately documents all relevant clinical information in a clear and timely fashion in accordance with established procedures
  14. Regularly reviews results of all investigations and modifies treatment as required
  15. Liaises with other medical specialties and support services for additional input as required
  16. Actively participates in multi-disciplinary meetings to help plan effective, safe and holistic care for individual patients
  17. Ensures preparation of patients for all procedures including obtaining informed consent
  18. Accepts clinically appropriate referrals from the Emergency Department, primary care, other departments, specialty clinics, walk-in patients, and patients referred from other hospitals
  19. Participates in and ensures the provision of on-call hours coverage on a rotational basis including evenings, nights, weekends and public holidays as required
  20. Communicates clinical information to patients and the patient’s family and friends (with the consent of the patient) in a timely manner
  21. Maintains a good working relationship with members of staff and promotes collaboration and a team-based approach to patient care
  22. Performs other clinical duties as assigned
  23. Helps lead quality improvement within the Department
  24. Supports a culture of regular audit and encourages the use of audit results for improving clinical practice
  25. Supports the reporting, investigation, and response to untoward incidents
  26. Fosters a culture of learning, development and continuous improvement across the Department by:
  27. Promoting and assisting in the instruction, guidance and supervision of junior medical staff
  28. Facilitating the provision of essential training relevant to clinical staff in the specialty
  29. Showing commitment to Continued Medical Education (CME)
  30. Promotes and participates in clinical research and publication
  31. Keeps abreast of the current, relevant literature and the latest trends and technologies in the industry

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience:

  1. Required:
  2. Tier 1: NLT 2 years relevant experience as a consultant or equivalent post board certification.
  3. Tier 2: NLT 8 years full-time employment as a Consultant or equivalent post-board certification (includes years in fellowship training) in an internationally accredited institute.

For UAE Nationals

  1. Clinical Fellowship training following primary specialty board may substitute for experience as follows:
  2. Each year of clinical fellowship is counted as two years of clinical experience
  3. Only applicable to clinical subspecialty fellowship in the following countries (Australia, New Zealand, Canada, UK, USA) or HAAD accredited fellowship programs

  5. Current national license or equivalent
