Job description

The Chief Reservoir Engineer is accountable for Reservoir Engineering functional excellence throughout and for ensuring that reservoir engineering analyses are effectively integrated with other key disciplines, particularly G&G and other Petroleum Engineering disciplines, but also wells, facilities, economics, and commercial.

The Chief Reservoir Engineer is a required participant in the functional review and assurance process; the incumbent will endorse (or not) investment proposals and provide expert advice from reservoir engineering points of view to enable the Executive Committee to make investment decisions. In addition, the Chief Reservoir Engineer is accountable for classification and quantification of companywide/asset-wide Discovered Resources (Reserves and Contingent Resources) and for preparation and maintenance of the Company’s documentation backing up the reserves and resources reporting.

An important aspect of the Chief Reservoir Engineer’s role is to support the development of reservoir engineering personnel through expert guidance and advice.

This is a highly visible role which involves routine contact with executive management and requires the ability to influence without (line) authority. The incumbent will not only be an expert reservoir engineer but also have high emotional intelligence and the ability to quickly form high-quality working relationships in a variety of different cultural settings.

Responsibilities

Technical Leadership

  1. Develop technology strategy and roadmap and tracking of its implementation.
  2. Proactively identify technical requirements and value creation opportunities in his area of expertise.
  3. Responsible and accountable for technical aspects of project and improvement initiatives.
  4. Provide leadership in driving and monitoring technical implementation of operational/engineering improvement initiatives/best practices and capturing lessons learned.

Consultancy

  1. Provide technical guidance and advice in the area of expertise - Reservoir Engineering (e.g., technical support in troubleshooting, problem diagnostics, technical audits & benchmarking, project risk assessment, etc.).
  2. Provide technical solutions to specific issues/potential problems (e.g., reliability/integrity improvement, etc.).

Talent Development

  1. Assist in recruitment of high-quality staff and consultants; specifically responsible for conducting a technical interview during the recruitment process.
  2. Provide guidance to reservoir engineering personnel through coaching, mentoring, provision of expert advice, and the identification of suitable third-party consultants.
  3. Participate in the development/review/enhancement of technical capability development tools.
  4. Participate in the development/review training requirements and modules and conduct training.
  5. Conduct technical competency assessments.

Technical and Professional Excellence

  1. Internal and external networking with technical experts for continuous technical development and advancement and introduce best practices/technology/innovative ideas and work processes.
  2. Participate/Lead improvement working groups.
  3. Participate and share knowledge of best practices within the industry and learning institutions.

Technical Assurance

  1. Responsible for Reservoir Engineering functional endorsement of Investment Memoranda and all other relevant business decisions/processes requiring management approval.
  2. Functional assurance of reservoir engineering for asset management and reservoir management.
  3. Assurance of technical quality in project teams through regular oversight (assists & reviews).
  4. Ensure conformance with reservoir engineering standards and policies.
  5. Work with subsurface personnel to ensure that a fully integrated multi-discipline approach is utilized across the business.

Reserves and Resources Reporting

  1. Accountable for classification, quantification, and reporting of companywide Discovered Resources per the Company Resource Policy.
  2. Responsible for the preparation and maintenance of the Company’s documentation backing up the reserves and resources reporting.

Qualification

  1. At least Bachelor’s Degree in petroleum engineering or related engineering background, preferred Master or PhD Degree.

Experience

  1. Significant (20+ years) post-graduate experience in upstream oil and gas (exploration, development, and production) with a key focus on reservoir engineering.
  2. Expert reservoir engineer with significant hands-on experience in all aspects of reservoir engineering including Classical analysis, PVT, SCAL, pressure transient analysis, material balance analysis, and reservoir simulation.
  3. The ability to collaborate with other subsurface disciplines to quantify subsurface understanding (in uncertainty and risk) and formulate/recommend integrated subsurface workflows.
  4. The ability to combine subsurface understanding with production systems constraints and ensure that this is proactively integrated with other disciplines (facilities, drilling, commercial, etc.).
  5. Prior experience in calculating, classifying, aggregating, and reporting Discovered Resources in accordance with 2007 SPE PRMS.
  6. Commercially aware. Prior experience in successful unitization and acquisition negotiations is an advantage.
  7. Strong mentoring and coaching skills; track record of managing professional subsurface technical staff.

Skills and Competencies

  1. Expert reservoir engineer.
  2. Hands-on working experience with key software (Petrel, Eclipse, Kappa, Petroleum Experts IPM, etc.).
  3. Sound understanding of G&G, Production Systems Engineering, well design, petroleum economics and how these disciplines are inter-linked.
  4. Experienced in Integrated Reservoir Characterization.
  5. Experienced in Oil and Gas Resource Estimation, Classification and Definition, volumetric calculation, Estimation methods (probabilistic and deterministic approach).
  6. Experienced in Depletion Strategy and Drive Mechanism.
  7. Expert in Sub-surface Development Planning and Execution, as well as Integrated Field Development Planning.
  8. Extensive experience in Numerical Simulation. Reservoir and well performance and development evaluation using Black Oil and Compositional simulators.
  9. Well surveillance, production operation and production planning.
