Roles and responsibilities

JOB TITLE: Surveyor I

Works as a part of a team of surveyors in the survey of the earth's surface to determine precise location and measurements of points, elevations, lines, areas, and contours for construction.

Primary Duties

  • Study the construction plan and the project plan and identify areas to be surveyed.
  • Take accountability for the area assigned by the lead.
  • Calculate heights, depths, relative positions, property lines, and other characteristics of terrain.
  • Compute geodetic measurements and interpret survey data in order to determine positions, shapes, and elevations of geomorphic and topographic features.
  • Prepare and maintain sketches, maps, reports, and legal descriptions of surveys in order to describe, certify, and assume liability for work performed.
  • Prepare or supervise preparation of all data, charts, plots, maps, records, and documents related to surveys.
  • Record the results of surveys, including the shape, contour, location, elevation, and dimensions of land or land features.
  • Verify the accuracy of survey data, including measurements and calculations conducted at survey sites.
  • Adjust surveying instruments in order to maintain their accuracy.
  • Coordinate findings with the work of engineering and architectural personnel, clients, and others concerned with projects.
  • Develop criteria for survey methods and procedures.
  • Develop criteria for the design and modification of survey instruments.
  • Coordinate with the Quality Inspectors for certification requirements.
  • Carry out other duties as directed by the supervisor.
  • Ensure compliance with Company Code of Conduct, local laws and regulations.

Desired candidate profile

  • Field Surveys and Data Collection:

    • Assist in conducting surveys to determine land boundaries, property lines, and the physical features of the environment (e.g., elevations, distances).
    • Set up and operate surveying instruments such as total stations, levels, theodolites, and GPS equipment to measure land features.
    • Collect data in the field, which may include measuring distances, angles, elevations, and coordinates to be used in creating maps, charts, or models.
  • Boundary and Land Surveys:

    • Help identify property boundaries and assist in preparing boundary surveys for legal and real estate purposes.
    • Work with survey crews to establish and verify boundary lines for landowners, developers, or government projects.
  • Construction Surveys:

    • Assist in providing surveying services for construction projects, such as marking out building foundations, roadways, or utility installations.
    • Work closely with engineers, architects, and contractors to ensure that construction work adheres to planned measurements and specifications.
  • Preparing Survey Documents and Reports:

    • Assist in preparing basic survey documents, such as site plans, survey drawings, and topographic maps.
    • Help with drafting or compiling technical reports based on the collected survey data.
  • Site Inspections and Measurements:

    • Assist in on-site inspections, documenting existing conditions, and recording measurements.
    • Ensure that measurements and data are accurate and properly recorded for further analysis and project planning.
