The Student Accessibility Services seeks an incumbent who is responsible for providing academic tuition for Students of Determination to facilitate them in the development of academic language literacy and study skills required to enable them to reach their full potential in their disciplinary studies. Using a student-centered philosophy, the candidate must be adaptable, flexible, and happy to work in an ever-changing environment with a capacity to develop a catalogue of innovative and creative learning activity strategies. Strong interpersonal skills to work closely with faculty, SAS administration, and Students of Determination are of paramount importance and an interest in developing new skills and knowledge, especially in technology, as required by the evolving demands of SAS and the needs of Students of Determination.
The Responsibilities
- Liaise closely with SAS manager and specialists and conduct needs analysis to understand the language academic literacy and executive functioning requirements of Students of Determination.
- Prepare and deliver effective targeted creative and innovative teaching/tutorials sessions on academic literacy, language, and executive functioning.
- Share, develop, and revise creative, innovative, and/or effective materials by adapting course materials used for content instruction to support students' development.
- Liaise with counterpart(s) across campuses and maintain effective working relationships to ensure appropriate consistency and exchange of ideas.
- Keep records of students and support provided and communicate these to SAS manager as required.
- Participate in discussions with SAS colleagues to maximize the effectiveness of the instruction.
- Contribute to the collection of data on the effectiveness of academic support provided to Students of Determination.
- Actively promote a positive image of SAS within the university.
- Advise faculty as requested on approaches to teaching material and assessment design that consider Students of Determination learning needs.
- Teach IELTS preparation classes when requested.
- Promote student success and work with students in intensive 1:1 and group tutorial situations.
- Foster student accountability and responsibility in the learning process.
- Provide constructive feedback particularly for Students of Determination to promote academic success.
- Uphold confidentiality and professionalism in all academic and administrative duties.
- Adhere to university policies ensuring compliance and consistency in procedures.
- Complete administrative tasks in a timely and professional manner maintaining accuracy.
- Participate in development and training initiatives to enhance teaching effectiveness.
- Collaborate and support colleagues creating a respectful and supportive working environment.
- Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability in meeting the evolving needs of the Student Academic Support (SAS) department adjusting work schedules and tasks as required.
- Demonstrate a genuine passion for student success with a strong interest in providing personalized support in both one-on-one and group tutorial settings.
- Assess and address students' academic, linguistic, and executive functioning needs. Familiarity with assistive technology and the ability to effectively apply these skills to support Students of Determination.
- Assess and develop strategies to address students' academic, linguistic, and executive needs.
The Requirements
Must possess a Bachelor's Degree and 10 years of experience teaching at a tertiary level OR a Master's Degree and 5 years of teaching experience.
Native level of spoken and written English is preferred.
Other essential requirements:
- A professional teaching qualification is an advantage.
- A genuine interest in the academic success of students, including a willingness to work in intensive tutorial settings.
- Ability to work under pressure and manage deadlines effectively.
- Self-motivated with excellent organizational and creative problem-solving skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills to collaborate with faculty, administration, and students.
- Good interpersonal skills and ability to work cooperatively with faculty, SAS administration, and students is essential.
- Must have linguistic knowledge of the disciplines offered at ZU or the interest to develop it.
- Willingness to work flexibly according to SAS requirements.
